I've heard from several authoritative sources that washing berries makes them rot that much quicker. Lynn Casper mentioned this just last Sunday on NPR. I doubt that the vinegar does much to slow the rotting process.

Thanks, Amber, for representing Austin! The still untold story is how you work in a art gallery in L.A. and live in Austin.

Good post, good comments. I have separate cleaning supplies in the kitchen and bathroom; wouldn't consider doing otherwise. I just got keyed deadbolts -- I had questions about their safety because they were illegal in some of the other towns I lived. The locksmith put them in without an objection, but he was otherwise a jerk. I have ADT too. What can I say? I live in an up and coming neighborhood and my family is PARANOID about my safety.

I'm sad to read that you're separated from your wife. The home is really lovely.

For the person who wondered if anything remains of the private space, Presidential families are always allowed to redecorate their private quarters. I'm sure the space looked quite different under Nancy Reagan's commaand. The Clintons were heavily criticized in the design press for their private quarters taste.

It would be nice if something so restrained and elegant could last forever. Sadly enough, the lives of that distinguished family were famously short, save for Caroline Kennedy.

I like the look of the mismatched wooden chairs. I was oblivious to fhe fact that something from Restoration Hardware could look so stylish.

My new place is 1,031 square feet. Sad that the extra 32 square feet disqualify me.

I, too, appreciated the floor plan. Beautiful use of color.

Having heard horror stories about geodosic domes ("leaky and creaky" as Kalakala put it), I would never think that one could be as comfortably and attractively put together as this one. I want to put in capital letters how much I loved the art collection! Congratulations on your wonderful post.

The Ilse Crawford room knocked me off my feet! I should have known it was English. I went to the NY Times design article and saw the other photos. A perfect converted manor with 23 acres. Obviously over the top, but an inspiration nonetheless.

Sigh. The crib is so pretty and so dangerous. Get rid of the bumpers, stow the quilt and the pillow for later. Check out the American Pediatrics Association guidelines. Dress the baby in a Missoni onesie, if you must have flamboyant style and color, but leave the crib free of soft surroundings. A well-fitted mattress and a tight sheet are all the baby needs. I am not an aesthetic minimalist, just have heard many professional lectures on the dangers of infant suffocation.

Thank you, Lolax and Kellyk. As barren as it may seem, a baby needs to sleep on a well-fitting mattress WITHOUT pillows and blankets. If you're afraid your baby is cold, dress him or her warmly. Babies don't experience coziness the way older children and adults do. They do not have the strenth to push away impediments that are interfering with their breathing. Pillows and blankets are a suffocation risk. Check the American Pediatric Association's recommendations.

I think my financial life is pretty simple. I automatically deduct savings from my paycheck, keep my credit card balances low, and know pretty much to the penny how much is in my checking account. I don't trust vendors to deduct from my checking account. It's that simple. I don't trust them. I review the bill and pay it online, but it's with my personal authorization every time.

I think the people who are not super clean freaks kept their mouths shut and didn't post on this issue! My mattress is a very good one but it's ten years old. I know I have to replace it but my mind reels at the expense. I replaced pillows about five years ago. All are hypoallergenic. I keep dust mite protectors on the pillows and mattress and wash and change the sheets and pillowcases regularly. The comforter is relatively new and I wash the duvet now and then. Am I missing something?

Drop-Leaf Tables: Beautiful Space-Savers

Thank you for this post. I am buying a condominium that is great in many ways but lacks a dining area. After a lot of consideration, I bought my first piece of furniture for the place: an oval-shaped gateleg drop-leaf table. It's more than vintage; it's old. But it's more practical than many modern pieces. I have many questions about proper placement and this post gives me some good ideas.

The first shot was kind of funny -- the mounted deer's head looked like it was sitting on Chad's head like some kind of berserk Viking crown. A classic photographic mistake. That's a serious drink cart. Liked the black Pantone chairs. Agree with Sabrina the Destroyer about the clothes rack.

What a friendly, low budget environment! Yes, the bed was messily made up, the sofa was sagging, but Bill didn't pretend to be anyone he wasn't -- just an engaging guy who cared enough about his space to put it together creatively. Good for him. I liked the stadium seats. I liked the kitchen. Basically, I like Bill's place and look forward to him rocking whatever world he's living in.
