Back when white walls were first becoming 'trendy' I tried it out. They lasted three months. I live in the upper Midwest, and honestly during the white-washed winters, it was horrible. The white didn't "brighten up the space". It didn't make the "rooms seem larger". It was.. blah, even with my wonderful art pieces. And honestly, made my tiny rooms feel even smaller.

It's funny if you think about it. It seems like we have been fighting for color for the longest time, and just when it is really being acceptable (even by landlords) it is being pushed aside, even poo-poo'd. Go with the latest trend, but don't dismiss color for the reasons given, because they are completely false. Perhaps she should learn how to use color appropriately instead of pushing her "beautiful" rugs and pillow line..

I love her because she's sporting the same silver "ombre" hair I am. Her design taste isn't so bad either ;)

I wouldn't go too dark because like another commenter said, it's going to look pretty small. A medium tone to set it off would be great however. Some ideas from Benjamin Moore (only place I bothered to look atm).

VixVax, I doubt it. People trip over themselves to proclaim what they dislike. This post and its comments amuse me.

There's a lot going on, but I don't dislike it. I find it pretty intriguing.

Though, what turns me off is that while the place has so much going on, why couldn't Max tidy up a bit? Fairly simple to move a broom out of a picture and vacuum the floors, cover what I assume is a stained floor (hopefully), amongst other messy/dirty things. His taste is pretty wild and crazy, does he think the gross just adds to it?

This contest is very skewed. What influences the votes:
1. When the entry is posted.
2. If the home is rented or owned. (For obvious reasons)
3. Size matters. Usually. Unless of course you live in a tiny that is basically bare with an Eames chair sitting in the room.
4. If you are crazy social. Be it a popular blog, twitter, or just a social butterfly.
5. Current trends.

Were all of the finalists the best of their divisions? I don't think so, but this is what we get when we have a public voting system and allow the entrants to shout from the rooftops about their entry. Oh well, it is what it is and AT doesn't seem to want to change it. So we just need to suck it up, enjoy the eye candy and not get irritated when the scales are unevenly tipped in ones favor.

DEARAMELIA~ The grey cover, sheets and pillow cases are from Target. The cover we got on clearance a while back however. The throw was a gift and I am not sure where it was purchased from. Sorry!
ANNE PCK~ Ha. I totally take that "weird" as a great compliment. Cool weird is a great standard ;)

I will submit pics for a tour within the next couple of days. Thanks again everyone for all the love!

Annie.42~ We live right off Lake Superior so even in the winter under cloudy skies, we get plenty of light off of the lake..er ice. The dark interior is also incredibly cozy in our long winters ;)
TIFFANYSEATTLE~ Since this is a rental I didn't actually paint them, the black is leather look contact paper. With how easily contact paper is removed now without residue, it was a great choice to perk up very outdated orange wood cabinets!
NORAHL~ Thanks! The painting of the dog I did myself and it is of our dustmop/Pomeranian. We have his food dish and container there, so I made it personal for him.
MINNASAUR~ It actually does. When the walls were white the window just got washed out and disappeared (it is so bright being right on the lake!). The light now seems to hit everything and the room itself feels so much larger.
LCA~ It was so difficult choosing the pics I was going to use! Every corner is filled with random curiosities and is so much fun to explore.

We are kind of on the nerdy side of the spectrum, LOVE the Kraken/Cthulhu. We also have a few references to Game of Thrones, TMNT, and Snow White amongst others. Keeping everything on the neutral side makes it all work nerdly awesome.
Thanks for the fantastic comments everyone! I wish you could all come over and enjoy it with us! Oh, and sorry for the upside down horribly drawn layout..

It doesn't feel to techy or cold at all like most of them do, quite warm and welcoming actually. Beautiful really. Well done.

I am curious what is actually done by the couple though since it is rented? Is it wrong to assume the floors, cabinets (kitchen and bath), and the white and black moldings were all done by the owners while the movable furnishings and possibly (perhaps not?) the paint on the walls done by the renters?

Don't get me wrong, it is furnished beautifully, I am just wondering what the couple actually did themselves besides their own personal furniture and paintings. Heck, with all the grey naysayers, we aren't even positive they actually painted everything grey themselves.
