A lot of my personal exposure to things in the '80s were holdovers from the '70s, so that was what skewed me toward the decade before the photo was actually taken. Good job those that pegged it correctly! Guess the Decade: Lofted Sitting Room - The Answer |

Yes, I too am a 1981 baby, and I am also swooning in nostalgia while noting the absence of a few of my personal faves like Popples, Ninja Turtles (my LIFE at 7 years old, y'all), Rainbow Brite and Care Bears. I miss my old-school not-pictured Polly Pockets - much like the old style Little People, I feel they were more fun in my own life when they were more "dangerous" as choking hazards. And @discerning - Barney the Dinosaur wasn't introduced until 1992. I know that well because by then I was babysitting and I wanted to constantly yell "MAKE IT STOP!" whenever he was on. I got that from AT&T as well for the sole purpose of finally being able to place the television where it "belonged" in my rental duplex (since the landlord wouldn't allow access to the attic for a line drop). It's been a lifesaver - I was able to begin the process of remodeling my whole living space to what I had seen it in my mind the day we first toured it. Now, as far as exploring the "move the TV here or there" aspect of the wireless receiver? Pfft, whatever, it's serving its purpose and, after much struggling and gnashing of teeth, I was finally was able to hide all the other cords connecting up to my TV away, so there's not a chance I'm moving that thing again unless needed. Grrr, other cords! Roving TV: A Wireless DVR Receiver Experiment |

I have a similar "living room walls full of doors/fireplace" layout in my duplex (just that mine lacks that back wall with windows where the previous owners had hung the TV in your photos - my space just keeps going back from there) and where to position my furniture vexed me for years. The most recent change, however, seemed to just click with the space, and people visiting usually confirm that my love for it isn't just me being crazy. I have my couch where your windowed section is on the far side of the fireplace (floating though, because, as I mentioned, no back wall in my doop, just more space), I have a large area rug with a coffee table, ottoman and a couple of small seating solutions taking up most of the middle space, and then my TV is on the opposite wall, and the flow works pretty well for my own poorly-designed-1980s-duplex space. Now, I don't know the size of your TV or if you have any media storage that make the suggestion not work so well, but it's just food for thought from someone else with the always-fun fireplace-next-to-a-doorway setup. Heh, I'm actually in the process of doing the quick-set-concrete-in-buckets thing for my own lightweight sun-shade destined for my back/side porch. Rules of the rental state that I can't attach anything to the outside of the house, but I'm determined to have some hanging lights out over my patio and an opaque shade during the hottest part of our Texas summer days. But yeah, not going the bamboo route - metal poles all the way. DIY Outdoor Awning 101 Woonideeen |

This is great - I'm dying to get the funds someday to own a place in Brentwood (or, hell, any of the North 6 neighborhoods) and this is fantastic what has been done with your space. I hope those clerestory windows open as well, since we get such fantastic breezes & weather here a lot of the year, especially in the evenings. Cass & Carla's Elegant, Playful Home House Tour |

Sailor Jerry mixed with real-sugar faux Dr Pepper (like Maine Root's fantastic "Dopplegänger" or my local grocery chain's DP knock-off's cane sugar variety) is AMAZING. I love that drink so much. Otherwise, I will often go with Sweet Tea Vodka (Deep Eddy is my brand, because multi-time distillation and local goodness) mixed with a bit more sweet tea and some real sugar lemonade. Deeeee-licious. Our Readers' Favorite Brands of Liquor Reader Intelligence Report |

I saw that chandelier (or at least one that was incredibly similar) for sale a couple of years back when walking by my local Z Gallerie shop and I had the most INTENSE urge to buy, despite renting a place where I'm not allowed to do electrical work. Way to go! I'm okay with it too, especially since the duplex we're in is just the right size at a great price and close to both me and my long-term boyfriend's work, but not in an HOA neighborhood (which all the regular housing developments around this area are, and I HATE HOA builder developments). Honestly, unless an affordable lot popped up in my dream area of town, I'll be fine being in the duplex for quite a while longer. In fact, if my landlord ever wanted to sell, I'd scoop it up in a heartbeat and do the mass gutting renovation I've been dying to do since moving in. But, as it is, it works, and we're happy. It's just the rest of the family that keeps telling us to get married, buy a house, and have kids. Not ready, not sure when I'll be ready, and not in a rush to get there. I've been considering it for a while, especially since our landlord went with a very light-but-pinkish beige for our walls and it's starting to drive me nuts (especially since it's a color almost matches the tile that runs throughout the place, which is just so grrrrr...). Then I start getting a headache thinking about what color I can go with that will go with my decor and that floor and I just call the whole thing off.
