to @AMARANTA I don't thing we get dumber. Its just when something new comes along its completely different from way we have. The longer you use a system the more entrenched you become. Another very Indian custom that will gain you points with Indian Families. If the family has the kids make sure you bring some tokens for them. Usually chocolates and candy work well. Another Indian thing is to sit down after a formal dinner. Usually you lounge and talk about work and stuff. This is usually when the drink comes out. It is totally acceptable to being some Scotch if you know the hosts drink. If the Hosts don't drink do NOT under any circumstance bring anything to drink. Even if they do serve alcohol. I believe the 13,000 Sq feet comes from having an open courtyard. Back in the ancient days homes were frequently arranged around a central courtyard. This is an excellent interpretation of that concept. Essentially instead of the western way of having a garden around a house the Garden is contained within the home.
