I have to agree - I don't think "upcycle" is the right word for this.

But seeing these pictures I went "NO WAY" and fell in love. Want want want.

Canadians - I just bought a really cute and bright green floral shower curtain from Superstore! Can't remember the exact price, but less than $30 for sure.

But how do you get in? Do you have to crawl in over the side?

The few parents who've posted here saying "get a clue" - it's wonderful that you're so accepting & willing to roll with it, but that sure isn't the case with all parents.

My Dad in particular is incredibly fussy about cleanliness and decor - I used to have a bright turquoise ceramic parrot that he consistently talked about how "weird" it was - along with my other colourful art & decorations. For anyone outside my family I don't care at all, but to avoid lectures and feeling put down when my family visits, I scrub scrub scrub and 'normalize' my apartment. For the record, I nicknamed my parrot Big Blue and was heartbroken when my cat knocked it over & shattered it.

I have the Hammacher Schlemmer Peaceful Progression Alarm Clock - best purchase I've ever made. It has gradual light, one of six nature or zen sounds, as well as scented oil release - and you can have the alarm set to any combination of the three (I prefer light with sound, my coffee maker works as scent for me). Having a past of screaming shit-show alarms that made me stomp around in the morning (and likely for the rest of the day) this clock has literally changed my life.

I have a latex mattress with a pillow top I purchased on sale from Ikea. It's amazing. Legitimately amazing. I don't ever want to buy another mattress.

I feel the same about these as I do about turtlenecks. Uncomfortable, stifling, claustrophobic, and something I've been forced into by an elderly relative I don't like.

I just don't see how these look welcoming. I could understand someone liking the clean lines - but a bed, to me, should feel and look inviting, cozy, lush, etc. I feel like sleeping under one of these would be reminiscent of wearing a straight jacket.

One of my big keys to a stress free bedroom is the temperature. For me that's leaving the window open a couple inches for fresh air, and having a few extra blankets at the end of the bed I can just drag up (no complicated unfolding, in the middle of the night when I'm cold & not completely conscious that drives me nuts) in case I get cold.

I just bought a sleep mask a few weeks ago and it's changed my life! I have a hard time getting to sleep, and I've had heavy light blocking curtains in the past that have helped falling asleep enormously, but made getting up in the morning much more difficult. Now I put on a light-blocking sleep mask at night, and in the morning I slide it off to my light curtains letting the morning light filter in and I can actually wake up!

I've been living alone for the first time for 3 months now, I'm loving every second of it. Watching every Amanda Bynes movie that comes on, balling my eyes out at Grey's Anatomy, and not having to care about mess are among my favourites. I'm planning on painting, still figuring out decorating as I go, spending all day in total scrubs, like Lady J said it's all mine. The freedom is sublime.

Bringing all the information right away is definitely useful, but here in Vancouver what can often be the deciding factor is whoever brings in the deposit first - so bring your checkbook too!

No Fail Ways to Land Your Dream Apartment Renters Solutions

I move often because I get restless, and because my life changes. I love the apartment I'm in now, but when I go back to school to finish my degree (hopefully within the next year) I won't be able to afford it. But I don't see moving as a huge issue as some do - I think the hassle is worth being somewhere where you're happy, and packing is such a good opportunity to do a good purge!

@ Erica Romeo - your story made me really sad, as someone who's experienced cockroaches I'm so sorry that was something you had to deal with on top of everything else in that time. But try to think about your next move positively - you're getting away from bugs! Maybe you'll have more space, and your husband while have a better commute! Maybe you'll be close to a grocery store!

The trick to getting landlords to be honest about cockroaches is saying that if you move in to discover an infestation, you will happily break your lease to get away from them. Doesn't matter if you're bluffing - they won't want the hassle. To keep any kind of bugs at bay, every time you wash your kitchen & bathroom floors spray along the edges & especially in the corner with an indoor bug spray, it works a trick.

When Do You Know It's Time to Move?

My instant reaction was NO. I would feel claustrophobic. There's so much going on I almost feel sick and I'm not even there!

I like what sabrinathedestroyer said about how the words she can make out are "yo" and "graffiti" - agreed, totally lame. I've seen some amazing graffiti around Vancouver, and I think it would be so much better if it wasn't ALL tagging.

I was disappointed by this article because to me all those photos look like very workable spaces! I'm at a total loss what to do with mine - the heavy fire escape door opens facing the wall of the hallway. There isn't enough room to put a table or bench on that wall or the door won't open all the way. It's a fairly narrow hallway that has two closets to the right before opening into the main space. To the left of the front door it ends with the bathroom opening to the right - I had originally wanted to put a bench at the end of the hall there, but then you can't get into the bathroom. Maybe I'll take pictures and send them in here and hope it can be a "good question". Bah.

I agree with what Kateln said about this depending a lot on where you live.

Owning for me just isn't feasible - starting out, I don't make very much money, there's no way I could buy a home at this point in my life, and probably not for a good 10 years.

And besides that, I love renting - like others have said I can live in a building and a neighborhood I could never afford to purchase in. I love the low commitment, I can move whenever I want or need to, there's so much less stress involved, and my resident manager lives in the building next door - if there's any problems he's just a phone call away. I'm reasonably handy and enjoy taking on little projects (like regrouting my kitchen, I live in a 1950's building and ceramic tile is adorable, but was filthy with the low low grout) that I can do myself, but if there's anything I need help with I can trust it will be fixed right away! And I'm on a month to month lease which is the most comfortable for me, I feel like I have a lot of freedom. I always think, worst case scenario? I move. No biggie.

It sucks when you have a landlord who isn't cooperative or a building that you don't love - but again, this is one of the reasons I enjoy renting; if I have serious issues with the landlord or the apartment, you can move. A lot of people avoid moving like the plague, which is something I've never understood if you're really unhappy where you are. Sometimes it's better to pay to break a lease than continue living somewhere that causes stress.

Yay renting!
