I had the same issue as Kevin - switch on the outside, light on the inside. I was wandering the aisles of Lowe's a while back and came across a thingamajig that screws into the light socket between the bulb and socket. Flip the switch on and the light goes on. Switch it off and the light goes off. BUT if you turn it on and forget the thingamajig cuts the power to the bulb automatically after 15 minutes.

And it only cost something like $10.

Brilliant!

Now if only I knew what it was called.

Sorry, if you're going to build it in why not just build in a small closet with a few low speed fans controlled by a regular wall switch timer?

Sure you don't get all the whizzy options, but it'll cost you about $3,800 less. And that's $3,800 you can use to buy renewable power through your normal utility.

Now that I think of if perhaps I'll take the shelves out next to my washer and install a little hanging closet and some fans. Thanks for the idea! :-)

Not another generator from the running water!

This is NOT free power!

You may generate power from the running water, but in order to get that water to run the water company either had to pump the water into a water tower OR pump it into your house from a local distribution point. So every watt you leach out of the running water came from somewhere.

If everyone did that your water bill would go up in order to pay for the power wasted pressurizing the water to spin your little generator.

Amazon.com has a Sony wireless HDMI transmitter for $275. They also have one from a company called Brite-View for $350.

Hot, but what's with the wiring? Having them hardwired together makes placement more difficult than it should be.

I like this because it will work with all iPods/iPhones even if they're in a protective case. The only thing missing is audio out.

You can buy laminate from some home improvement stores and install it yourself. I'm pretty sure that the Home Depots in the area stopped carrying it, but a couple of years ago I got it from Lowe's in Woburn.

Lowes has information on installation on their site.

It's more difficult than painting but will definitely look better. Plus it's cheaper, faster and possibly easier than completely new countertops.

I have a bunch of BoConcept stuff in my living room and would not do it again. Though I think it's better than Ikea quality I agree with the other commenters that it is overpriced.

Spring for the Poliform if you can afford it.

While not exactly as shown I think you use an induction loop and earpiece intended for other purposes. A quick Google search turned up this as an example:

Definitely Quicken. It attaches the receipt right to the entry so it's trivial to find it if you ever need it.

BUT

Something to keep in mind with scanned receipts is that most stores refuse to accept them for returns. For example Home Depot has a 1 year warranty on plants. When a tree died (actually never sprouted, but whatever) I brought it back to them with a print out of a scanned receipt. The cashier told me "no copies of receipts accepted". Much harumphing, complaining and escalating eventually allowed me to exchange it for a live one.

If you scan the receipts I would recommend throwing the originals into an envelope labeled with the month and year of purchase if there's any chance you might need it again. Quicken will help you find the right envelope and then it's just a matter of finding the right receipt.

The are cell phone boosters - and I don't mean the little stickers that you put on your phone that don't actually do anything. See http://www.spotwave.com for an example.

I have some outdoor all weather wicker furniture from Grandin Road, some from Frontgate and some from a third, unrelated company. All are of equivalent quality and while I can't speak for the interior furniture, I'm happy with the purchase from Grandin Road.

Note that Grandin Road is just one brand owned by the same company that owns Frontgate, Ballard Design and others.

If you like the look of it mounted on the wall then just mount it to the wall and be done with it. The mounting brackets work fine on drywall as long as you use enough anchors.

I have a 50" and a 42" mounted to drywall in my condo. In both cases I made sure to find at least one stud and then put about a dozen molly bolts into the drywall. When I was done hanging the mounts I literally held myself on the mount to make sure it would hold more weight than the TVs and to be certain that there was no wobble or looseness. A year later I wonder why I was so worried about the TV falling off.

Keeping the CD means that you have a license for the music. If you get rid of the CD by selling it you are transferring the license to the purchaser of the CD and you no longer have the right to keep the MP3.

If you were to throw the CD away I'm not sure whether you'd be legal or not. Clearly you haven't transfered the license to someone else, but by the same token you can't prove that you had a license in the first place.

Sun Rays are incredibly cool, but unfortunately, as Ondrej says above, they are not really intended for home use and don't fit well (which is unfortunate). The device requires a server which must be running Sun's Sun Ray server software which was cost prohibitive the last time I looked. Digging into Sun's site it looks like the cost is now down to $125 per client which is more reasonable, but still. While I'm all for being green, and scrimp and save energy where possible and appropriate, the price of $250 for the device $150 for the license cost for a monitor, keyboard and mouse means this is about the same price as a low end cheapo laptop (running Windows).

For home users the laptop is a better deal, more functional and a better choice while not using all that much more energy. Oh, and the laptop will only be powered on when it's actually needed. The Sun Ray would require the server to be on basically all the time.

Not that I don't love the Sun Ray concept and execution for larger enterprises. They are awesome.

For our vacation home we have one of those cheap key lock boxes mounted on the wall next to the door. We figure the key is safe enough from someone stealing it and using it to get in since a real burglar would just break a window anyway.

For our home in the city we have a call box at the front door. Visitors are supposed to scroll to our name to call us and we push #9 to unlock. To make things easy on ourselves we had the management company put our cell phones in there rather than a home phone. When we forget our keys we just call ourselves from the box and let ourselves in! Now all we need to do is find a safe place to hide a key to our actual apartment... We've been trying to figure out a safe place to hide it for almost a year, so far without much luck. Thankfully we share a roof deck with our neighbors and the one time we did get locked out they let us cut through their apartment and come through the deck.
