Calling a kid's room creepy simply because it has images of them and their siblings in it? Wow, pick those with childhood issues! Learn to express your dislike without coming across as bitter or damaged. And no, your nasty words are not justified or relevant simply because of that much abused excuse "but it's on the internet".

It's nice enough, but way too over propped - it feels like you'd have to push aside many props in every room whenever you sat down to do anything at all - even read a newspaper. The props reached the point where they were obvious, rather than subtle. It felt like raison d'etre for the house was to be photographed. IMHO of course.

Your style is likely to be pretty fluid at this stage, so be careful of dramatic change, and big time or $ expenditure. I like Home body's advice - focus on art, and a new duvet cover.

Ahh, anything looks marketable when you picture a pretty model in it. But try sticking Mr and Mrs Average in it, or a toddler, or grandma, and see how plausible the concept really is. Maybe it should come with a disclaimer "pretty, fit things only, no back problems permitted".

Okay, I'm the one who likes milk in eggs.... and yet I make the best scrambled eggs in the house. Wet or dry to me depends on how long you cook them - I cook them a little drier if I'm having them on bread, moister for crunchy toast. Cream sounds a tad caloric for home (although I'm guilty of loving it at cafes).
My MIL who can cook (I generally can't) told me off for putting milk in the eggs (claimed it was depression era practice) and then proceeded to make me the worst, driest, crumbliest scrambled eggs I have ever eaten :)

Ahhh, so of course you post this great idea after I move out of the apartment with the box kitchen which I put up with for 8 years! If only I had such vision, sigh.

"I agree with Canadianmango -- the television above the fireplace will be too high to view comfortably."

I don't :) Our TV is above the fireplace - initially I was also concerned about the height, but I noticed it only the first time - then it's so not an issue. Plus I love the fact it's out of the way of small kids, plus I free up space the tv stand took. So give it a try - it's not like you have to commit - if you don't like it after 2 nights, move it back :)

Where you put the couches depends on how you use the room. If you frequently have lots of guests at once, then you need easy access to the seating - not everyone walking through the one gap between the TV and couch, as you have now. But hey, again couches are easy enough to move - try it a few different ways over a few nights and see what you like.
Me, I'd like to read next to that window - so make sure there's a reading chair there if you're also that way inclined :)

I think it's hideous....but.I freely acknowledge I don't have the design vision that some possess. I often look at the before pictures of furniture/ rooms / houses with an "arrgghh, ick" and the after with a "but how did they even see that - wow!". If you've got the vision to transfer the ick to a wow, then use those talents and go right ahead. If you don't, put the list down and walk away slowly.

This article makes no sense, and appears as an advertisement, given all the specific product naming, pricing and URLs. If these companies are not paying for this product placement, I strongly suggest your marketing guru makes a few phone calls post haste.

Quite simply, such a "friend" doesn't need more stuff - you've even just mentioned "Space is at a premium in their small rental".

What she needs is more help - did you notice "they don't have any family nearby"? Instead of spending $$ on stuffing the small rental, why not organise her a cleaner? A regular cleaning but even a few one offs would be appreciated. Give her the help a family might provide.

(Actually, scrub that - after the marketing guru makes a few phone calls you can afford a lot more cleaning).

Most of us have the stuff we need, but not all the time or energy. Send her these instead.

Hang on, according to the link the $1400 includes six vintage/ rare (?) books ... I'm no rare book expert, so I'm not sure if that leaves the shelf costing approx $100 or $1000, but it's certainly something to consider :)

We could all give our personal views, but really the best people to ask are fire-fighters. Not only have they attended countless house-fires, they're usually also tertiary educated in fire physics/ chemistry / engineering.

Somewhat aside but forgive me because I think it's quite interesting - pink being designated a girls color and blue for boys, doesn't really go back too far (Somewhere between 1868 and 1940 or so, it became mainstream). This is an interesting quote from Wikipedia "An article in the trade publication Earnshaw's Infants' Department in June 1918 said: "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink
Not sure how you could argue it's a hardwired gender preference, rather than a culturally imposed stereotype, in the light of historical practices.

Anyway, I digress. He's 3 1/2 - enjoy the innocence and let him be himself. Maybe team the pink with some bold reds and greys. I understand pink is kinda cool in the skater scene, so there may also be some sporty boy things to be found down that path.
