Not only is the house great, but the tour finally focused on entire rooms and their flow, and not on vases of flowers, pebbles and other accent pieces.

Thanks for the link to the original house tour. It was especially good since the last few photos were the "before," which was really bad. Nice job on the redo!!

Perfect example of comfy, shabby chic done very, very well. Would love to see the converted garage and dressing room/closet.

Nice re-purposing. The size of the added "feet" look a bit weird, and I think I would have gone for wheels (large ones that lock into place). That would give even more versatility.

Should have added ... all to the interior of the door, not the exterior. By exterior frame, I mean the large surround. I should think before I type!!!

You could attach double sticky-sided tape to the exterior frame, and to the interior wooden cross pieces. Then you could cover over with anything you like, fabric, painted plywood, etc., cut to fit over just the half-circle window. Cheap, easy, and not permanent.

As seems to be happening of late, we don't get a "house" tour, we get a "stuff" tour. I have no idea of the actual space itself, which I think is important for a successful tour. This has been happening for about a year now, and I wish we could return to the "old" Apartment Therapy.

Left side is great for hanging and showcasing scarves. All you need is one big hanger. The suitcase could hold other accessories and jewelry.

I too thought that the "before" was a veneer finish. What a surprise! Wonderful job and oh so much work ... you should definitely be applauded!!

There's a Turkish company (Istikbal) with an outlet/importer on the east coast. If you google Istikbal, you'll find their location. They have a model called Kubo, which is exactly as you describe. But, this is not expensive furniture. They had this piece on sale here in Greece for only 500 Euro. It is a clever sleep sofa/storage unit, and would probably hold up for a few years. By then, you may be living in a larger apartment and not need the storage!

Are you sure this apartment is 475 sq. feet? Even the kitchen could be expanded into a full galley, if desired. Nice space!

Nice job! Bet you can't wait to get to the end. Have you considered butcher block for the countertops? Would bring a bit of natural wood back into the kitchen and would tie in with your farmhouse table (presumably natural wood?). You have such a nice light vibe going on that I think the dark tops would totally destroy the overall look. Why don't you cut and tape some dark paper on top of your existing counters, then stand back and have a look. I have a feeling you won't like it. Keep us posted.

I expect that the counter-height fridge is tucked under the counter on the left (near the stove), or perhaps it's to the left of the sink (if that's not a dishwasher). I've lived for years with a half-size fridge, which is great if you're on your own and don't entertain much. You also don't need a dishwasher, which gives you extra room for either a half-size fridge or a separate freezer. I don't think I'd ever go back to a full-size fridge. With less space, you tend to use leftovers quickly. It's amazing how you can learn to adapt to less!

You must tell us your secret. How does a grad student afford an apartment like that in NYC? I'm very impressed!

Excellent use of that long hallway! And, it's really nice to see decorative iron work on the patio windows/doors, instead of those horrible iron bars that you see on so many lower floor NYC apartments. Makes a huge difference, and you still have your security!

Old houses are so odd and quirky, I guess that's what makes them so interesting. Your bathroom is nearly as large as your bedroom! Would like to have seen a photo of your long, narrow kitchen. Do you have a blog with more photos?
