Holy bejeezus.

You have been extremely smart with your furniture choices placement of course, and I generally like your things and your colors, but this is literally the most perfectly built apartment I have ever seen. Down to the fact that it is a square, so it would be easily repeated in an apartment, and everybody could have this great apartment.

There's not an inch extra anywhere, but everything is SO thoughtful. The hallway spacious, so you don't feel cramped when you move around, but there is only one hallway so you don't lose valuable space that way. The living room just fits a sectional (comfy seating for several friends to watch TV) and can face a TV and that's it - no dead zones losing valuable space. The bedroom just fits a bed and that's it - no dead zones losing valuable space. The bathroom has actual counter space and literally my favorite layout for the bathroom (I didn't realize I had one till this apartment had that too on top of everything else) with the toilet semi-hidden by the vanity by its position and the toilet and sink on one wall opposite the shower. The slight offset of the kitchen from the living room is clever so they feel like separate zones while still being very open to each other, plus all the room saved from the efficient bedroom and living room got given to the kitchen/great room, which is AMAZING - it is SO generous for a small apartment. The high ceilings and huge windows getting light everywhere is so luxurious and the short walls allowing that light even to the back of the apartment are very clever. The fact that the great room layout allows for a large table, which is like most versatile piece of furniture, and shockingly, like, the first thing people usually scrap. And then the generous balcony?

I mean, shut up.

Mark which architect designed the bones of this apartment in the first place? I want this person's business card. Either for safekeeping in case I am ever wealthy enough to need an architect or just maybe to email him/her and tell him/her how seriously impressed I am.

Also, can you post a floor plan? These pictures don't show the entry/closets all that well, and I am now legitimately interested in the minutia of this particular apartment.

In order of necessity, things I absolutely need:

1) No threats to my safety/health
2) Wedge pillow to elevate my legs (painful vascular problems)
3) Clean-smelling air.
4) Relative Quiet
5) Pleasant enough temperature
6) Lots of sunlight.
7) Somewhere to curl up (couch or arm chair) when I sit
8) Litter box for the cat

Things that I just missed that list:

9) internet connection
10) toilet
11) places for all my things to be put away neatly without piling up
12) lack of visual clutter
13) some greenery of some sort outside my window

For the first time ever, I'm thinking, "Why can't my bedroom just be a nursery?" Peaceful, cute, pretty, and with lots of sweet colors - what's not to like?

I like everything in this apartment and the apartment itself, but I think the layout of these pretty items within this pretty space could be better. In particular, the grand bed shoved in the corner like that is a bit odd, and there are parts of the seating arrangement in the living room, the too-high height of the screen in front of the couch, etc. that are really making me think that a little tweaking would make this place sing. I wish we had a floor plan of the whole apartment to tinker with!

I think it would look odd to have different cabinets under it, since the peninsula cabinets will be attached to the other cabinets. The contrasting cabinets only works when the area with the different cabinets is totally separate from the others (e.g. uppers vs lowers, perimeter vs. island, etc.).

What about doing legs under the peninsula instead of cabinets? Like these:

That would circumvent the whole problem.

Brilliant or Tragic? Good Questions

Maria, what is the height from your counter top to the bottom of your upper cabinet where the toaster oven is? I have a wall with uppers meeting a wall with no uppers just like that, and I like the way the you did your backsplash height.

Thanks!

What an adorable chubbo baby! Also, your husband's hot, your dog is hilarious, and your apartment has THE most pleasant atmophere!

Erin, you're not doing too bad.

I scored a zero as well. I have truly terrible eyesight and have always felt lost when picking paint colors, so that surprises me.
