I grew up poor. Now I am not. I don't wildly spend money on big-ticket items, but when I have a purchase to make, I carefully consider the quality, durability, repair-ability and timelessness, style-wise, of the item in question. It's a matter of buying something once that's heirloom-worthy, versus the continual in-and-out shuffle of second-hand items, which is how I grew up. Consider that many people save carefully for items others might consider "ridiculously overpriced."
