As many have said, quality over quantity. I have found that it pays to be blunt and straight forward, and go with your gut. I earned several close friends by simply saying I thought we had the makings of a strong friendship and I wanted to make an effort to cultivate that friendship. I agree with many of the commenters above. Most recipes I try are not so different from what I'm used to cooking so it's easy for me to see where I can tweak proportion, flavors, techniques, ingredients. When I'm cooking something very different than usual, I'll look at a number of recipes to see what the common threads are and then tweak from there.
