Clearly they both love books, so having "enough" is highly subjective...it's not for anyone else to decide! Those huge library rooms look cool, but it's unrealistic of how most people live. I love the personality in this place, and you can tell that they put a lot of care and thought into making everything work! I am charmed by this space, which is hard to come by these days!

Thank you for your comments, and just to be clear: no trees were harmed in the making of this shoot! The branch was found already broken off behind our photographer's studio.

We hope you enjoyed the preview issue!

Far4 is one of the best boutiques in Seattle! Anyone is guaranteed to find something fantastic, whether your budget is $20 or $200. Jenny and Yuri are amazing--so knowledgeable and friendly. Their website is really well done, so check them out for sure! P.S. I'm not a family member of anything...just a fan :)

This doesn't have to do with cleaning, but I'd like to add that drinks AND glasses should already be out when the first guest arrives, even for a small party. Nothing is worse than having someone say, "help yourself," and by that they mean rifling through their cabinets, and the first one you open is never the glasses cabinet. I have several types of glasses already lined up on the bar, as well as all the drinks (alcoholic and non), which have been corked and chilled or otherwise readied. When I walk in to unprepared scenes I think: did you not know you were expecting anyone?

Ok. I'm going to break my own rule about criticizing--I know there are real people behind these posts. But when are people going to wake up and smell the mediocrity with Design Sponge? This is butt ugly. I feel D.S. is an Emperor's New Clothes kind of situation...but more like "Emperor's Old Craft Crap" situation.

Fun space! All the accessories seem personal to you, not generic, and I appreciate that. I also like how you are envisioning the space as you continue to work on it. I think we are also going to buy a white waffle curtain! Love the jellyfish print, too!

Yes, all so true! And you can save yourself a lot of money by not buying anything unless you love it, so in the end, you're surrounded by all your favorite things :)

I know that at least Meyer Wells actually saves trees in the city from being completely destroyed. Their methods are non-toxic, etc. Not sure about the others, but it would be worth looking into before making a proclamation.

What's tackier than having imperfect grammar when speaking?

Calling people out on it.

We must rebel against this obnoxious behavior.

Interesting question, but I'm not surprised to find everyone with the same knee-jerk reaction. The jig is up, everyone--everything is a social construct.

We're all pretty worried about girls, aren't we? That's revealing. To play devil's advocate, I interpret this anti-pink stance to insinuate (as an extreme example) that girls don't have the ability to think for themselves, so if someone gives them something pink then they are automatically going to be turned into some delusional princess-type. For all of you independent women out there who were surrounded by pink growing up, you must disagree.

I think our children are going to have bigger problems than whether or not they had a pink or a blue nursery. Furthermore, what's wrong with being masculine or feminine? I thought this whole gender neutral movement was over after the '70s.

To reiterate, @bthursby: I went through this exact same thing...I ordered house numbers online, and then I went to home depot and found some modern ones for about $5/piece. I returned the ones I had ordered, and nobody is the wiser!

@abc123: Good design doesn't have to cost a lot. Period. But some design does cost, and that doesn't make it inherently bad.

I was anticipating (and look, I was right) comments from people who disregard the spirit in which the post was intended to veer off on a tangent ("buy nothing day", for example) that ultimately turns into something negative.

AT posters work hard to bring us creative, original material, and people still feel the need to complain. If you'd rather be out saving the planet or campaigning for cheap design, read Re-nest or get out from in front of your computer where you sit and read a DESIGN blog and go do it. Or, wait for a post that specifically addresses design philosophy re: design vs. cost.

Snarky people have taken over AT...I just want to have fun.

End rant. Love to the peeps.

Unfortunately, hardly anyone (under 30) entertains like this anymore. The casual life has taken over--from sweatpants in public, and to throwing parties. I moved out of state and away from my circle of friends for a short while, and in my new circle, so many of my party efforts were in vain. I actually wanted to have a Halloween party a la Capote's black & white ball, and when I started pitching it to my friends I was met with the query: "who is Truman Capote?" Needless to say, they had never heard of his black & white ball, either.

The regular dress-up halloween party I had, a few people actually came without costumes. Incredible. For my birthday I threw a Studio 54 theme party, and a few people showed up in tie-dye and hippy gear. Do you homework, people! Suffices to say, I wish people went all-out with entertaining like the good 'ol days--creating a festive atmosphere doesn't have to be hard or expensive, I promise!

I work in the design industry in Seattle, and you have a few options. The Seattle Design Center will pair you with a designer, i.e. someone who can buy at the showrooms for you. Just go to seattledesigncenter.com for the relevant info. It doesn't mean you have to use them for your project.

Designer Fabric Liquidators (rickbaye.com) is a fabulous resource...see this blog post for a little more info: http://blog.seattlehomesmag.com/stores/shopping-at-designer-fabric-liquidations/

As far as the reason for to the trade...well, there are many, but just remember that if you love good design (and as an AT reader, I would assume that you do), please support interior designers. They, along with your local retail stores, need your patronage to continue providing you with inspiration (designers via published projects, and retailers via unique merchandise).

I don't think the "it's a vase" argument is really the point. Gauging the level of copying is just a red herring in this argument.

Clearly, Target is trying to get mileage from Zeisel's design--blatantly using her idea (same color, even) to move merchandise. And, the fact that it ISN'T a gravy boat makes it even more shameful, because it's not trying to give a cheap alternative to the original, it's just using her design for their benefit, uncited.

That is where the line is for me. Those fake purse kiosks on the street are probably selling designs that Gucci (or whomever) doesn't even make, and slapping a Gucci label on it. It's not a knock-off, then?

You have to look at the spirit in which it was intended, and I think their intention stinks. They should stick to inviting the designers themselves to design special lines--it's more honest and frankly, a good idea.
