Buzzing usually comes from the dimmer, not the bulb. Even then, it's pretty rare. As long as your dimmer is out of earshot, you won't have any problems.

If they are, it looks like the installer was going for an indirect lighting effect. The actaul effect, though is a bunch of wasted light going out your skylight!

Kudos to USERNAME26 and TSPINTERIORDESIGN for suggesting reflector CFLs, but that may make the situation worse unless you do it right. You want to redirect as much light downwards as possible.

It looks like those lights pivot, so I would use the suggested Halogen PAR or CFL reflector bulbs and redirect them to hit a light-colored surface like the solid part of the ceiling. It may sound counter-intuitive, but it will bounce nice, soft light back down.

I love those clip lights from UO!

These are more pricey ($100 for 48 ft.), but they can't be beat for bigger get-togethers: Outdoor string lights.

You've got to be careful with the light source you use for lighting bookshelves. Halogen and incandescent sources emit UV, which deteriorates paper faster than you might think. Some warm white LED rope light running along the underside of the shelves is a better idea, IMHO.

I did it when I was a kid! My family of 5 lived in a 500 square foot garage apartment. The house only officially had one bedroom, so my dad took the storage compartments that were build on the low side of the walls, wallpapered them, added a built-in radio, shelf, and tape player, then put a twin size mattress on the floor. I slept in one, my sister in another, and my brother in another. I didn't even know it was weird until I went to a sleepover at a friend's house!

A nice twist on these is to use a silver bowl light bulb. It will direct the light back into the reflector instead of straight out. It makes for a softer glow and just looks cool.
