You're inspired by their ingenuity? They aren't hipsters who choose to live in 40 sf to make a statement about values and commercialism. They aren't showing their spaces as a way to show that you too can get by in 40 sf if you just have some tricks up your sleeve. I just got back from 2 years in mainland China, which really is a whole different story, but with similar underpinnings. The housing situation really is terrible as is the pay, health care and a host of other human rights issues. AT, please provide better context to articles like this.

I'm glad that someone commented on the Boston proper thing. Add West End in there. And I'd like to say that the North End was great to me. I loved it as a newlywed. I loved it with kids. I'd still be loving it but we got priced out :-(

Personal time? Free time? What are these things you speak of?

I've worked in an office, I've worked from home and I've been a stay at home parent. That commute that used to suck so bad? Yea. An hour where I could hyperfocus on anything without having to be interrupted, even if it was driving and song lyrics that I was focusing on sounds awesome. That uncomfortable poop that I used to take in the office bathroom praying someone wouldn't come in? Yeah, I haven't defecated alone in 3 years. There is either someone crawling up my leg, screaming from the living room, or screaming and crawling up my leg.

I love, love, love staying home. But it isn't all roses and kittens. I don't have an inch of personal time with a nursing baby and a toddler. The only time I sit all day is to nurse the baby and I'm either shushing the toddler, responding to phone calls, or yelling because she's biting or he's ripped his pants off and is rubbing his crack on my curtains. Yeah. . . really.

I had the most insanely stressful job before and I much prefer staying home with my kids. However, and this is the thing that really gets me sometimes because I'm an introvert, I can't call it quits at 5. Or 6. Or ever. I have to really carve out time to do anything but care for my family because they are 24/7 at this point being so small.

Ugh. This sounded so Problem That Has No Name. Haha. I didn't mean it to take that route, but what the hey.

I'm glad that they did something they will enjoy. However, from a resale point of view (if this is a consideration), I don't think they did themselves a favor. And, I'm kind of holding back tears because the before floors were just so wonderful in that raw, "tells you a story" way that wood floors can be.

Love the room. Cool to see another Søren! That's our sons name as well. Go Kierkegaard!

We had a small fridge when we lived in Boston and it was awesome. It forced us to quit buying a ton of junk we didn't need and instead focus on fresh produce, grains, etc.

Did anyone else find Oprah's tone a little condescending? It was more on the "wow, you're crazy" level than just the "wow" level, at least for me.

my upstairs neighbors are horrible. They stomp constantly, it sounds like the guy is working out with a bar and drops it on the floor, and they get in the worst arguments ever. They've thrown furniture against the walls, yelled obscenities at eachother, etc. I've heard her scream "You're f'ing psycho" and then I hear running and "STOP!" it's really horrible. I've called them cops on them twice. It's really depressing. The worst part is that it's not at a normal hour. They woke me up at 6 a.m. sceaming at eachother. On a Saturday. Who the hell has something to YELL about on a Saturday morning at 6 a.m. The rest of the world isn't even coherent. Go back to bed!

my only advice is, if it's on the first block of Marlborough, be careful. we just moved out of a studio last month and it might be the one you are looking at. it was so awesome on first glance, but the landlord was really bad. If it says "sprinkler room" on the front of the apartment and the apartment backs up to the laundry room, you're looking at our old place. Run! Thank goodness it was a sublet.

1300 sf. two bed, two and half bath two-story condo. two parking spaces and laundry downstairs in east long beach (the nice part, by the university). $1300. :-) best deal ever! found it on craigslist listed in the wrong county so nobody even came by before us. :-) we're moving to boston in four weeks though. I'm excited because I'm an east coast girl, but man i'm gonna miss this deal!
