Re the bits of carpet, you can buy these stair treads for $10 at Home Depot, and then affix them with carpet tape (http://www.amazon.com/Intertape-9970-Indoor-1-87-Inches-36-Yards/dp/B000I1EHK0).

This is what we did before I got around to buying a runner, since it was cheap and quick and removable. The tape actually holds very well.

Second these. I think these would look perfect with this bedding.

I think the fabric they have is pretty nice, but if I were reupholstering and wanted something sturdy, I would do upholstery velvet or tweed.

I've had good luck with denverfabrics.com for apparel fabric. You can also try www.koshtex.com for stretch fabrics.

Swatters 42 - the grill is a great idea, as long as there's nothing next to this furniture that would block air flow. Until you get it installed, though, I wouldn't play the Xbox with the drawers closed. It will overheat and shut down in a matter of hours.

I say that from unfortunate experience :|

That's a lovely batik. Depending on the size I think that would look really great framed. If you keep the frame modern (I think something sleek and metal) it won't look hippy-dippy. This site has been recommended here before, but it's a relatively cheap and easy way to get custom frames:

If it's really big, and you're crafty, I might sew it to a heavier fabric like cotton duck or canvas, and hang it from a dowel with loops or curtain clips. Again if it's surrounded by other modern things it won't look un-modern. The design is pretty bold and it's nice to have one or two things that aren't strictly adhering to a certain style.

Sandee - I got an ironing board wall mount from Amazon:

But it looks like that one may just be hung on two steel hooks.

I have a loveseat from these people:

Just a basic-looking sofa, but it's very comfortable, comes in leather, and is sturdy. Their costumer service is also spectacular.

I like Ikea, but I wouldn't pick it over something that would last, as long as it isn't hideous. Seconding the suggestion that you refinish the quality table in a color you like better, and get some modern chairs.

Check out this collection, there are some similar patterns:

You could also consider putting some chinoiserie fabric on the wall, I think there have been some tutorials here on how to do that.

It's not the same, but the colors on the left pillow remind me of the Amy Butler "Optic Blossom" pattern, in Linen. You could probably find someone on Etsy to make if for you if you didn't want to DIY.

Also try searching "medallion," here's some similar:

For making your own stencils, the best stuff I've found is Dura Lar, available at art stores:
http://www.dickblick.com/products/grafix-dura-lar-clear-acetate-alternative/

You just cut your design with an exacto knife. And you can use plain house paint - as PaigeP points out, it will never wash out. However the fabric additives make it more flexible, which can be nice.

I agree it has an appealing wood pallet look and I definitely wouldn't paint the whole thing gloss white - it's incongruous to the style. Gray stain like the Anthropologie dresser is my vote.

Reminds me of that Woody Allen SatC quote, about him waving across the park to Mia Farrow.

Granted that ended badly... but I can see how it would be nice if you could afford it. It's not for me, but I don't think you can make a snap judgement that it's "dysfunctional" without knowing the family's circumstances.

To each their own, and all that.

KrazeeNYC - I haven't tried it, but supposedly you can use Zinsser "Cover Stain" primer without sanding and it sticks like a charm. Check out this blog post where someone painted their Hemnes dresser:

Hey - that thing you have necklaces hanging from near your desk... I have that thing! I think I got it at Ross. Never would have thought to use it as a jewelry organizer but it's sure cute! I love that you used it as a stencil (I think) to make that aqua canvas above your couch, too.

Your place looks really comfortable and fun, I like it a lot.
