I sure do make a pile/piles. I have a house in the Bahamas so I keep a box in the basement where I add things I want to take for the next trip as soon as I return from a trip. For other travel I start making piles about 10 days in advance, especially reading material. I have learned to make things easier by keeping a well stocked toiletry kit and computer bag with appropriate chargers for phone, ereader, computer. My carry on bag is fully stocked with lip balm, tea bags, nail file, gum, lotion etc so I know I will be prepared for anything.

I have Oriental rugs all over my condo and I decorate with a Mid-century modern look. I've gotten some great antique rugs at the Ann Arbor Antique Market and believe it or not, some beautiful handmade rugs at Ikea. That was about 6 years ago and I haven't seen rugs of that quality at Ikea for a while. It is worth a look though.

Magazines on the plane are one of my simple pleasures. I'm flying next week and saving a stack for the flights.

I just purchased the Irvig wine glasses from Ikea. They feel great in your hand and at your mouth. Wonderful value.

I am a big fan of Plasti-dip I coated the bottoms of baskets to give them color and so they wouldn't scratch a wooden surface. I've dipped keys (not the part that goes into the lock) I transformed plain Ikea flatware with colored handles at my vacation home. I made a simple straw bag into a cute purse with Plasti-Dip on the bottom and the part of the handle that would be the grip. I also dipped the "collar" on terra cotta pots. My jewelry studio is in the basement. I have special ventilation installed to eliminate toxic gas. I generate a lot of dust and metal filings which I wouldn't want in the main living space. I just posted my studio make over which you can view here, http://spiralstyle.blogspot.com/2012/07/studio-makeover.html

I used to own gold flatware. I was afraid guest thought I was either "putting on the dog" or "tasteless" so I sold it on ebay. I had to be hand washed which was a pain. I've seen it on blogs and in catalogs lately but I'm not sorry I sold it. I love the antique silver plate I bought at an antique market. I had it professionally polished and I use it everyday. I do hand wash but so worth it. I love the look of silver. I'm a silver jewelry artist and can't get enough of the stuff.
