The Historic Chicago Bungalow Association offers several how-to seminars and tip sheets, including one on masonry cleaning. http://www.chicagobungalow.org/restore/howto.shtml The discussion forum has several recommendations for brick work. We are getting our kneewalls rebuilt by AAA-1 Masonry and Tuckpointing. Not only has runoff from the neighbor's downspout caused the kneewalls to buckle, but when they repoured the concrete stairs they got concrete all over the facebrick. We have the Oreck electric broom and have been happy with it so far. Our dog sheds like crazy and it does a great job of picking up the dust bunnies. I just have to plug my northside hood. I am in Hermosa (west of Logan Square), but there are a plethora of affordable (under 300k) Chicago bungalows, Kelvyn and Kilbourn Parks are both just a few blocks away (btw, Kilbourn Park is having their annual organic plant sale this weekend). To get downtown you have to take a bus to the blue line, it is a bit of a hike, or it is an easy bike ride. The community is mostly Polish and Hispanic. I also have to rave about our realtor, Lee at Big Shoulders Realty.
