Absolutely YES in the kitchen, no everywhere else! The little ones in the bathrooms get rinsed often and washed in the dishwasher occasionally... I use square IKEA baskets in my office that fit on my bookshelf and blend with the baskets used for other storage - one for recycling and one for non-recycling... I just make sure not to put anything yucky in them and they can be dumped and put straight back on the shelf. The only other thing we use a bag for is scooping the litter box... for obvious reasons...

I think it shows versatility that an architect or designer can appreciate and master many different styles. Its about respecting what the house and the client are all about, rather than about your personal taste.

That French Rabbit shown in the picture isn't half bad.

I'd be careful of the exterior frame bearing any weight as well. We put one of the LACK bookcases on its side with casters on the bottom and used it as a TV cabinet. One night we heard this huge crash, and went out to our living room to find our TV on the floor (still in one piece, thank goodness) and the shelf at a crazy angle. One of the casters had punched right through the thin material of the exterior frame, just from the weight of our A/V components - not nearly as heavy as dishes!

That said, if you can figure out how to distribute the weight properly (like in the linked IKEAhacker instructions) It would look fantastic!

The first images are his restoration/renovation work... the contemporary exterior is his personal home (new construction).

The interior shots at Western Living are great too!\http://www.westernlivingmagazine.com/HD/05.homes.buildingamystery.html

Is it toxic?

Apartment Therapy New York | Magic Wall Magnetic Paint

I would caution the use of the phrase "a little magnetic paint".

We thought this would be a fabulous idea for one wall in our kitchen, and ended up having to paint on 7 or 8 coats of the HORRIBLY toxic smelling stuff just to get magnets to stick to it. Even with that many coats (which totally changed the texture of the wall) you can only put one piece of paper between the magnet and the wall before they both go sliding down to the floor.

Great in theory, difficult in practice... maybe we just got really cheap paint, but it is not an experiment I would repeat!!

I've heard of this idea for clothes, but giving yourself a full year, so that you have been through each season.

I like the kitchen idea, although I think I'd need more of a storage locker than a cardboard box for all my kitchen junk. It is the hardest room for me to de-clutter, because of all the "well, I might need it ONE day" excuses. I have so many gadgets that I loved for a month and then never used again (plunge mixer? milk frother? slow-cooker?)........ now that I think about it, maybe I should have a garage sale.....

Creative, yes... but I'm a believer in the idea that function needs to come first in order for something to be well "designed"....

Also... would the "cooking" one even meet building code???

I'm with those who keep them in the car. I have some grocery store ones (the checkout people like them, because they're designed to fit on the bag rails), a giant IKEA blue bag, and a cute one I use when I go anywhere else.

I unpack right away, and leave the empties next to the stairs so I remember to take them to the car with me next time I go.

My big problem, and maybe some other readers can help with this, is remembering to take them IN to the grocery store. I am constantly running back out to the car to get them (I refuse to compromise and use plastic) and hoping nobody re-shelves all my groceries from the abandoned cart in the meantime!

Oh the hilarity... my hubby and I have this argument alllll the time. I agree with marfa that it is more of a nurture vs. nature argument. You're likely to continue to put the roll on the way your mother did it.

I agree that you aren't going to be able to work any magic that makes the windows appear symmetrical here, because of the way the left one actually touches the wall.

I would take advantage of the wall space on the right side and add a bookshelf that hits the window frame the same way the wall does on the other side. Then, as previously suggested, center something between the windows, to draw your eye to that space. A console table with an interesting arrangement on top of it would be nice there, or a side chair and small table with some art above... create a pretty vignette...

I also like the idea of leaving the radiators exposed, but painting them white to match the window frames. The roman shades are a good concept, but too dark, which just emphasises the window placement even more. I'd go with sheer shades that fit in the window frames.

Akostalas: You probably don't want to water your garden with water that has had bleach in it... if you keep the water moving it stays fresh and discourages mosquitoes... We have a whiskey barrel fountain that we have a simple water bell in and it makes a nice sound and stays fresh all year. All you need is something to recirculate the water - doesn't have to be fancy.

Sherwin Williams paint has a dumbed-down version of this idea. You can upload or select a photo and when you click on different hues it will match them up to one of their paint colours and suggest co-ordinating chips.

Not nearly as fabulous as colourlovers (of which I am one) but fun for quick room ideas.

The only problem with this additive, is that it relies on the continuation of one of the worst possible processes!

I suppose that while we are still burning coal for energy we may as well make use of the byproducts, but we have to be careful that we aren't perpetuating a greater evil by buying up its waste.

Most fabric stores that sell home decor fabrics will have outdoor choices. You could also try a store that specializes in boating equipment - there are often really durable cheap outdoor fabrics meant for nautical applications (so you know it'll withstand a little rain!)
