Where is this list from? Is there some kind of documentation for this?

We live in a 7th floor apartment with windows that open from the top and bottom. How do we clean inside and out?

I love the combination of books and carpets. It feels so rich. Can we have a house tour, taureg?

I agree that bamboo is great in the bathroom, especially if you have a window that opens. I put a pinch of miracle-gro potting soil in with the water and rocks so they'll live longer. I don't bother misting, since they get shower steam at least once a day.

How often does mint like to be watered, once it is getting full light and has room for the roots to grow? I tried transplanting a bit from my parents' California garden and it dried and yellowed within a couple of weeks sitting on my very sunny desk in NYC.

Thanks, Sciencegeek! I am also unrepentant about loving books. Between us, my boyfriend and I have about two and a half thousand in our one-bedroom apartment. We read them, reread them, consult them, and loan them to friends. I also find them beautiful.

We host a September book swap for friends, too, which means that not only do we weed annually, we get an influx of free books every fall. After the swap, all the leftovers are donated to Housing Works, a NYC charity that helps people living with AIDS.

Well, sometimes an extra vote helps, so I'll just say I agree about the sofa/tv swap and the drapes. Also, I can understand why you don't want a big coffee table but you need SOMETHING. Two small sturdy tables would work well for you because they can also double as additional seating if you keep that in mind when you're looking. Also, if you end up rearranging for a more formal look somewhere else, they are versatile enough to become end tables or even bedside tables.

I'd love the Czech Chinatown! It would be a great gift for a friend who's a big fan (She does environmental policy on water rights) and also a graphic designer.

I guess if winners are chosen at random I don't need to explain any more?

I think it is great that you love your current place for what you have done to it - this makes it likely that wherever you end up, you will be able to make it equally awesome.

I don't have a real housing story to relate, but I do have a mantra: make every change an upgrade. This goes for moving, for rearranging furniture, for painting - one often feels compelled by circumstances to change things, and that's the best time to also make them better. I hate the idea of anyone coming into my home and saying what great potential my home has. I would much rather hear, "It's amazing what you've done with the place!"

The ideas of a circular or oval rug and an oval coffee table sound great - I just want to note that you don't have to buy new stuff, necessarily! You could try repurposing other things in your apartment. Do you have a low sideboard in the dining room? It could turn into a media center with room for colorful art above it. Do you have a queensized mattress? You could slide that media center behind it to create a kind of visible and hidden storage combination.

Also, I think the yellow sofa is a great choice for a sunless room. I did that in my last apartment and loved it.

This is beautiful, and would look teriffic next to my old-timey bath.

Does anyone know how wall decals do with intermittant steaming?

I've seen a lot of them on AT, and I think they would be great for that one bathroom wall where no pins will go, but I don't really know what the decals or made of, or what the sticky is that makes them stick.

I would be sticking them onto a smooth semi-gloss.

My favorite way to eat figs is off the tree in my parents' jungley back yard.

If one can't get figs fresh, I have been surprisingly pleased with dried figs that often come in little wheel-like bundles, say at the East Village Cheese Shop. I like to slice them and add them to the boiling milk when I make cream of wheat, or soak them in white wine, water and lemon juice and add them to a fresh fruit salad as a little chewy bit.

I roll up my Strand tote and use its own handles to tie the roll shut and it always sits at the bottom of my handbag. It is quite light and takes up very little bag real estate.

I like organizing by bowls. It's easy enough to toss stuff in, and everything is still visible, so you can just fish around for what you need. I have a bowl on the coffee table with the remotes, game controllers, tape measure, a slinky. A bowl in the bathroom with all my hair clips and bands. A bowl in the kitchen with rubber bands, twist ties, etc. It's a great way to limit the footprint of clutter while still keeping everything accessible.

I love that so many people have commented with book suggestions, with favorite used bookstores, and with the desire to appreciate a home full of books. In my opinion, assuming the client of the poster wants to read is absolutely the best possible way to take this post. However, none of that answers my earlier query of how this post was considered a good question.

Patrick Too: You have a photography collection! I bet it awesome. I also bet you a) chose the photographs yourself because anything one collects is probably personally important, and b) use the photographs. With photographs, this means displaying or looking at them frequently. With books this generally means reading them.

Incidentally, my boyfriend and I have over 3500 books in our apartment, and I host an annual bookswap in the fall to keep our selection in circulation.

I think RichardinLA makes an excellent point - why did AT think this was a good question?

You have a great eye! Everything looks great together and then (so often untrue) everything looks great on its own. I am especially impressed by your ability to make black look intentional.

What is the white branchy-coraly thing on the wall behind the armchair in the livingroom? It looks awesome, and I miss the branches I used to have at my ceiling.

And remember he gave you free materials, too! An acknowledgement of that should be reflected in your payment, like when you get a free drink at a bar but still tip. I really like the idea of agreeing on how many manhours he put in, getting his hourly quote, and then bumping it up a bit yourself.
