Many of the houses in my neighborhood have a nook like this one over their fireplaces. Most people just fill it with tall fake flowers, family pictures, candles, and religious icons. It is so weird looking ... Don't do that! The most effective use I've seen involve a single, large item to fill the space: a decorative piece of pottery, a small storage item like this http://www.copycatchic.com/2009/10/ballard-design-baxter-side-chest.html, or a live plant in a big round pot. I work in front of a computer until10:30pm every night, so I've had to calibrate my falling-asleep method very carefully. I have to get up at 7am and I require a LOT of sleep for optimum function. I take 1mg of melatonin at 9:30pm, put my earbuds in with ambient beta wave music at 10:15pm, turn off all the external lights at that time, too, then go upstairs in complete darkness at 1030. I check the kids, wash up, and put on a hoodie, zip it to my neck, and put the hood up with the sleep mask over it so the mask stays put. There is a ceiling fan on high, blackout roller shades drawn, and a sleeping partner. If all goes according to plan, I'm out by 11pm. What Helps You Sleep? |

In our first house, we painted the walls off-white and the trim, fireplace, and crown molding this wretched greenish-yellow color (Behr Winter Wheat). We did not have children at the time, but once our oldest daughter was born, I learned that our paint color was the PRECISE color of a breastfed newborn's poop. I seriously painted my trim baby sh!t yellow. Have You Ever Experienced Decorating Remorse? |

That color is horrible and really dated -- like somebody upthread said, it looks like the color people did below the chair rail in a formal 80s dining room. Your decorating style/colors sound a lot like mine, though (I even have a chair covered in fabric similar to the red wall color!). I used a really warm gray on my walls -- Behr Granite Boulder -- and a deep, warm charcoal on my accent wall -- Behr Black Bean. I reallly like it, and it's neutral enough not to detract from my thick, bright-white trim, or to clash with my warm decor. Highly recommended! As a parent, it's hard to find a place to cry where it won't scare the children. They can handle teariness, but not the huge, heaving sobs that are sometimes necessary. For a while, I kept a pillow in the back of my minivan, so that I could climb in the back and bawl my heart out in peace, in the garage. I shared this trick with a recently-bereaved friend, after she learned her shower did not drown out her sobs as well as she thought. When her husband asked their two-year-old what they had done that day, the little girl answered, "mommy cried in the shower." Truly, the car IS the best place to cry. City Stress: Crying in the Car |

I would do black Windsor chairs with seats the same finish as the table. Or galvanized. Th Eames / Panton chairs are too focus-stealing. The Panton chairs are also far too large. Dining Chair Suggestions for Inherited Carved Wood Table? Good Questions |

Asolutely stunning. The blue bedding MAKES it. Pink would have been overkill, plain white would have been unbalanced ... The blue is just slightly unexpected and eleates the whole room to UTTER DIVINE PERFECTION!! Carole's "A Hint of Romance" Room Room for Color Contest |

The is no safe way to keep her off that railing, short of extending the wall to the ceiling. As a parent of 2 post-toddlers, I can vouch for the fact that you absolutely CANNOT overestimate their ability to get up/on/around things. It might not be worth it to everybody to childproof the things that are only capable of injury, but a fall from that edge would kill her. You can't mess around with such a glaring hazard. You never know what accident is waiting to happen under normal circumstances, but you must address something so unequivocally dangerous. Move the couch and call a contractor. In the meantime, I would keep that area completely clear, so there's no temptation to climb up on something else. You might also put a few breakable things along the top so that if she does attempt it, they will fall and you will hear the crash in time to get her away from the edge. I agree with AmberM about microfiber. Spot-cleaning just ends up making them look shabby & dirty. I also think they look cheap. We have a giant Bernhardt with textured, dimensional fabric. The pillow & cushion covers all zip off (but I wouldn't call them slip covers, so I strip them and machine wash & dry them every 8 weeks or so. With a 5 year old & 3 year old frequent washing is essential. Our couches are about 15 years old, and they have only begun to show their age in the last 2 years or so. Toddler-Friendly Sofa Choice? My living room faces northeast, and it's painted warm gray (Behring Granite Boulder.) it's pretty dim, but we like it that way. So I guess I would not recommend it for this space, even thought really like it a lot. Your rooms are beautiful, and the architectural details are fantastic. What a great find! I would try 2 things - first, take them off the rod and throw them in the dryer again (or wash them first, if they haven't been washed in a while). Add several dryer sheets, if you use them, to break up an hard-water buildup or detergent residue that might be weighing one or the other of them down. Then I would iron them both - ironing VASTLY improves the way my curtains hang. When you rehang them, remember to check that they are both hanging right-side out - sometimes it's hard to tell, and I've hung curtains upside-down or inside out many times!! I LOVE this idea! But I think it would only work with child-free or empty-nest friends. My kids are 5 and 3, and there's absolutely no way I would give up my phone if my kids are at home with a babysitter. In that situation, I would answer EVERY TIME. Tech Etiquette: The Phone Stack Kempt |

I am really disheartened by the attitude of many posters toward the normal behavior of young children. It seems to me that perhaps you'd *expect* to find a wide cross-section of ages and abilities at the grocery store -- everybody's gotta eat! Instead of scorn, you might try a dose of compassion for the glazed-looking mom in yoga pants, guzzling coffee ... she probably got 3 hours of sleep last night, thanks to the toddler screaming in her cart. I can guarantee she's doing her best, though, and she'd really appreciate you giving her the benefit of the doubt, rather than the stink-eye. And go ahead and move her cart to the side, if it's blocking your way. Just don't touch the kid. She doesn't want him getting your germs, any more that you want to get his. When I was single and living in my own apartment, I kept the coffee maker in the bathroom. I would set it to brew automatically in the morning, which did a great job getting me out of bed, because it was close enough that I could get my mitts on a hot cup asap, but far enough away that I was already closer to the shower ... at that point, it made sense just to turn on the water and get in. didn't have to share counter space with anybody, so it made perfect sense for me! I love the coral / gray / tile turquoise / white combo. I would do the wall behind the sink & mirror in coral, the rest of the walls in a warm light grey, and sink skirt / curtains (I see natural light - there is a window, right?) in coral / turquoise / white fabric. White bath towels and coral or turquoise hand / accent towels. Those tilEs are seriously gorgeous, and so are the sink & tub. You are lucky to have such a lovely starting point!
