My husband is a former baseball player and actually does keep a bat under the bed (and next to the front door, back door etc). Someone did try to break in through our bedroom door (while I was home alone) and my best weapon was my mouth. I screamed "Get the F out of here" with all of my might and really startled the intruder. He ran down our back door stairs and kept on running. Lucky fo rme, I live about 3 blocks from the police station and the helicopter & officers were there within minutes. If the intruder wasn't startled by my voice though, the bat was my next move. He (she) was trying to pick the lock on our bedroom door (which also has entry to backyard) and I figured a blow from the bat while he was fumbling with opening the door also would have worked rather well. My house is my indulgence. Mortgage in L.A. ain't cheap!! My second indulgence would be a housekeeper, which I am trying to get back to paying for at least once a month. Ikea has great rugs, inexpensive curtains & drinking glasses, nicely priced frames and vases, real food for when my blood sugar starts dropping, and a supervised place for my nieces to play when they get sick of shopping with me. My husband got in a major car accident on 8-8-08. A couple of robbers fleeing from the scene rammed into him, a fire hydrant and another car before fleeing on foot. His car is totaled. The good news? Not a scratch on him (just a little sore). I can either look at this as a very UNLUCKY day or VERY lucky that nothing serious happened to him. I have cat issues here, and we just dug out the soil until we couldn't smell the urine anymore, and added fresh new soil to the area. For our mulch, we use dried rosemary and pine branches. They are all dry and prickly and the cats don't like it. (the cats like our regular bark mulch unfortunately). I love these rugs and have quite a collection. However, mine tend to last longer inside than out. My ones kept inside are still just as bright, beautiful and clean as they were when I purchased them. The ones outside start flaking when they come in contact with direct sun...a mess to clean up.
