I wonder if I could sub Almond meal since I have some in the cupboard or since I have whole hazelnuts, if I should toast them and toss them in the food processor instead? what would be better consistency-wise?

My sisters and I have been doing this since we were children as well! My grandparents ALWAYS have large curd cottage cheese and kettle chips on hand.

Over time we began to eat cottage cheese with other foods that happen to be on our dinner-plate. I think the best concoction was a KFC famous bowl-esqe mixture of mashed potatoes, corn and cottage cheese. I have to admit that even today I enjoy cottage cheese on a baked potato as a sour cream substitute!

We haven't been using a microwave these days and I've totally seen those little buggers around. (We just moved to San Diego!)

Do you think I could put them in the oven for the same effect?

I just ran across a book at my local library called "Don't Throw it, Grow It! 68 Windowsill Plants from Kitchen Scraps", by Peterson and Selsam.

It's perfect for what you're trying to do. It describes what portions of the food to keep, if there's any pre-work that needs to be done in order to get the seed to germinate, and what method is best to get the roots to form (e.g. soil, water or pebbles).

I'm going to try myself. Best of luck!

This weekend I'm being ambitious, but foregoing the Pi(e) and attempting the cheesecake! I StumbledUpon a great-looking cookies 'n cream recipe to be made as soon as the ingredients are at room temperature and using the "perfect guide".

Tonight I'm roasting chicken using a basic recipe and using mixed fingerling potatoes and pearl onions in the pan for dinner.

Tomorrow is a dinner party at the folks and I'm putting together the apple tart from David Tanis' "A Platter of Figs". I can't wait to try it!

I too, am making a pasta casserole. I just put this Three-Cheese Parsley Pesto and Shrimp little number into the oven in honor of Lent.

I have 3/4 of a cup of parsley pesto left over. Suggestions for later useage?

I cooked this Monday night as well, and it turned out to be quite tasty. The flavor of the chicken was mild, but it does smell great when cooking. Would it be wrong to attempt to add more flavor to this?

I did not have trouble with the bread overcooking... I happened across a "day old" baguette at Meijer and it was quite firm needless to say. After cooking, half of the bread was very crispy and only a golden color, while the other half was soaked in drippings. If you didn't mind soggy bits of baguette, the flavor was amazing!

Argh. I wish someone would've told me this a month ago when I put together the walnut cigars from David Tanis' "A Platter of Figs and Other Recipes". The cigars were delish (even though my phyllo rolling skills were frightful), especially with a flavorful honey drizzled over them.

Does Mork from the show "Mork and Mindy" count? I want that alien!

I'd probably play him some classic Johnny Cash... maybe "Burnin' Ring of Fire", heh.

I have to agree with the warm scent of burning leaves is rather soothing...

On another note, my least favorite scent is that of the local sugar beet processing factory. Every Fall its stench covers the entire city in which I work... I can't imagine living near it.
