I would recommend a corded drill, personally. I've had mine for years (outlasted my husbands cordless), and it's got more power than the cordless version, and I just hate dealing with those bulky batteries, frankly.

I never would have considered it until I got a roommate who did this. When I asked her how she could rent a place sight unseen, she said that she could stand anything for 6 months, so she wasn't too worried about it. This was a revelation for me. Anyhow, I recently moved across the country to a house that we had never seen. It worked out just fine, and our landlords are fantastic. It sounds like you don't have many options, so I would just look at the great things about it (2000 acre backyard, what?!), and get excited!

I understand Pantone's purpose as a tool for designers, but I don't understand its popularity on things like coffee mugs and bicycles. All of the items listed are attractive until you see the "Pantone XXX" marked somewhere. I guess it's just a trend that I will never get, like chevron.

I... don't get the Pantone thing. Why is it popular? They're just color references, right? What am I missing?!?

Where is the kitchen with respect to the living room? Is that last picture taken from the kitchen? It's hard to tell without knowing that.

Am I the only one who likes this? I think it's a nice way to add some greenery without giving up limited counter space.

Did I miss where you found that chandelier? I love it, and would love to have the source, as it would be amazing in our dining room that is currently stuck in the ugly part of the 80's.

As a generally cheesy sort of person, I want to love these, but I just find them creepy.

My parents made a dalamation flamingo pair when we were kids: they painted it white with black spots, and nestled one of those panty hose eggs (with the same paint job) under them. Complete with a Santa hat and scarf, it "appeared" one night one the lawn of the local fire department, where it stayed for a long time, and even got an update with the changing holidays. The lesson here is that my parents are awesome.

I definitely disliked pink for years, for the same reasons. It was girly, and I am a feminist, so pink was out (let's ignore the inherent problems with believing that women can do anything, except apparently like pink). Aaaanyhow, I've recently started incorporating small amounts of it into my clothes and home, and it's growing on me. I really love that rug, and would put it in my bedroom in a heartbeat.

I made a gorgeous cutting board, and was going to burn a date onto it, but my wood burning skills were so poor that I had to do it in braille. Dots were all I could manage. It came out pretty great, even if it was a little more subtle than I intended.

@Serenity Now. Yes to Portlandia.

Also, that cozy looks like a dead racoon on the table. It's vaguely hilarious.

Oh man, we just had a doozy. Gorgeous old farmhouse, recently redone, on 6 acres, halfway between work and the town I want to live in, with a pool/spa (both new), and an enormous old barn with a greenhouse, and enough room for all of our projects. Also, within our budget. The agents said that they'd never seen anything like it for that price, and we put an offer on it immediately after it went on the market. So did about 7 other people, and I'm convinced that the only reason we didn't get it was the lack of an escalation clause in our contract (newbie mistake?). We offered the full asking price, and would have paid 25K over what it went for, but the sellers didn't negotiate, and were in a contract 5 days after it went on the market. We did just purchase an equally gorgeous farmhouse that's waterfront, but I'm still sad over that first one (and the barn!).

This reminds me of my favorite apartment. It was actually a guest house, with a large private yard, so I would sleep with the door open (security door closed), and listen to the birds. This room has a really nice feel.

I like notbob's layout, but I think the studio is too narrow for it. That the bed is going to block the kitchen entrance a little bit, and that's a no-go (at least for me), and with the table there, there's no room to walk past.

We recently moved cross country, and the company paid. I have no idea how much it cost, but suspect it was in the $10K range, based on what I've heard from others. I loved it, and our movers. They used sturdy, specialized boxes, took an exhaustive inventory, packed our 1300 sq ft house (complete with rowdy dogs) in one day, put everything in storage for a week while we drove across the country, and delivered when we requested, all with no hiccups. The ONLY thing I wish they would have done differently was to pack my nice knives better, but when I pointed out a dent on one of them, they immediately bought me a new one, so I can't really complain about that. All of my previous moves (including one other cross country move) have been of the "borrow a friend's truck, buy everyone pizza" variety, and the difference in the stress was remarkable. In the future, I will never move myself again if I can possibly afford it - totally worth it.

Nice job. I don't know that I would have seen the potential in the original mantel, but the end result is so much better.
