I'm a gen-yer, and I now have access to a garden for the first time in 10 years, since I moved away from home. I was a tiny-apartment dweller. I find a lot of the people my age or younger in my area are concerned with food growing, given the uncertainty of our times. We see the prices of food going up, and feel the need to do something about it, and if we can, we do. There's a sense of freedom, and also a return to a past where our grand parents proudly grew beautiful plots.

My landlord covered his gardens with old carpets and tarps. After 5 years of not being cultivated, allI had to do was pull it up, any weeds that managed to work their way through came out with the carpet. The beds that stayed uncovered were much harder to weed.

I love small places with big closets! It's almost magical how much can be hiddden away between uses. Also, so much can be done in a kitchenette, when used with imagination. Any thing a full sized oven can do, I've done with a good sized toaster oven.

+/- 250 sq. ft.
It had a tiny kitchenette that included an all-in-one sink, two burners, and a fridge beneath. Thankfully, there as lots of cupboard space and a nook that I piled milk crates, a microwave, and a toaster oven into and hung a curtain to hide. To enter the aparment, I had to pass through the kitchen space in a tight zig-zag, which made bringing in furniture mostly unlikey, unless it was small or squishy, like a matress. If I stretched out my arms in the bathroom, I could have almost touched the walls. The best thing about it was the walk in closet, it hid everything away so nicely. My clothes, library, overflow pantry, a folding spare bed for guests, there was no limit to what could be put in there. That was home for two years, up until four years ago, and I still miss that space, I had it arranged to my own tastes, but it was too small for two people working almost opposite shifts, so I had to move.

We have a garden available to use, and I'm so excited. This will be the first year that I can really get into it. When I was a kid, the rocky soil of my parents' yard was discouraging. This old garden, which hasn't been used in years, is huge. Three 3 x 10 beds, one 3 x 6, and three or four 3 x 3 beds. I don't expect it to be perfect, but Ill be doing a lot with it.

I could see these as a party favor, with small trinkets or fortunes inside. Maybe have them in a basket so people can pick one randomly.

I lived in an appartment that became infested with bed bugs. It could have been the sofa brought in from the curb, it could have been something the neighbours who we shared a wall with did, we don't know. My room mate was the worst affected, since his bed was right against that wall. We sprayed and used DE to no avail, since they would just go over to the neighbours until they sprayed, then they would return. Finally the land lord brought in an exterminator. we got rid of mattresses and soft furnishings. in the process, we found a bunch hiding in the frame and underneath my room mate's bed, full of blood, and he squished them, leaving a big blood stain on the carpet. We took everything out of the apartment, everything, washed all our clothing and bedding, and stayed at a friend's place overnight. Thank goodness it worked, I ended up staying in that apartment for another 2 years.

This such a nice room, with simple decor. I could imagine doing something like this, too. It's not overdone, and with a few easy changes, the whole color scheme could change. Who knows, maybe jane will want apple green and eggplant when she's older.

We currently live in 450 sq. ft.It's just right for two people, but if we started a family, it would get crowded real quick. The need for space changes with life. Young singles and empty nesters don't need as much space, and adding in the current economic uncertainty, we are seeing a real interest in compact well-designed spaces.

lately, i am feeling surrounded by small children, there seems to be a baby boom in this area of BC. I don't mind the parenting articles, since the thought of having a child of my own has been on my mind. If I wasn't interested, I wouldn't read it, just like I don't view house tours for spaces bigger than 1000 sq. ft.

I had chores, but If I have the chance, I'll start giving my children chores when they are younger. My chores didn't start until i was in high school, and if i didn't do them, I would get exasperated comments, but no real consequences. I think my mom was given a lot when she was young, and hated to load us up, and my dad was never expected to do housework, my grandma would even sugar his coffee. They married young, and leaned on the fly, and it all worked out well enough, so I'd just tweak their methods by assigning light chores earlier, with consequences.

oh, and budgetting education, too.

Ihave no children, but I remember when we got cable, it was an event. We didn't have a tv in our room until we were 10 or more. Mom and Dad didn't let us watch The Simpsons or Roseanne, because the children were disrespectful to their parents, and we were not allowed to watch TV during dinner, which we ate sitting at the table. Other than that, there was no stress over how much, and I don't remember it being a big part of my life until maybe around 15 or so, and by then I was scheduling my Saturdays around what cartoons were on. Even I knew that was excesive.

For that price, I would use it for more than bathing the babe. Maybe take it camping and use it to wash dishes? Extra huge salad bowl for parties? Fill it with ice and cool drinks?

As a non-parent, I am grateful to hear these suggestions. First, it gives me insight into the trials and tribulations of everyday parental life., Second, if I have my own lillte rugrats someday, I know there's a resource for the mundane questions that many books probably don't address.

I read her blog post, and agree that it had to be painted. If it were my choice, I would have gone with a brown, black, or white instead, but the blue she chose is yummy.
