Buy some fresh apple cider, find a recipe for pumpkin cinnamon doughnuts (they're out there), and take them out for a picnic by the river. Nothing says fall in Michigan to me more than a visit to the cider mill!

I'd like to find more buyers for my work like this in here in the Great Lakes region. Upcycling furniture for a living would be my dream job.

I hate giant poster-sized family portraits, and blogger-style black and white photo walls. They seem so self-congratulatory (Look at us, look at us!!) I have a few photos, but most of them are in albums. I prefer to use my wall space for funky local art.

I also hate words as art; life laugh love, Bible verses, pithy romantic expressions of undying devotion, etc. Gag.

Finally, it drives me nuts when people remodel a space and make it look as generic as dressing rooms at Banana Republic. It's safe and stylish, but completely soulless.

@Yonella; I have five chickens, and I must say you are right about keeping birds being more expensive than buying your eggs at the market.
But I love keeping them! They are beneficial in so many ways.
They turn all my kitchen scraps and their bedding into compost for my garden. I can cook those decadent rich French recipes that call for 8 eggs without batting an eye. Unless they have just layed an egg, they are quiet. They're beautiful and fun to watch. They're soft and tame, and they boss my cats around. The the eggs they lay are richly colored, dense and thickly shelled. They dig and eat grubs and bugs in my garden. and they are conversation starters in the neighborhood. Neighbors going on walks are always stopping in to check in on the girls. If I bothered to put a little effort into selling some eggs for 3-4 dollars a carton, I would make back what I pay for in feed. I love having backyard chickens!

Mine ALWAYS get scale, no matter what I do; I've tried it all. The only thing that works to get rid of them is the toxic stuff.

Acres and acres of cheap (almost free) land, a rich agricultural history, a good growing climate, Eastern Market, rich soil, a highly energized local foods movement, and Michigan is second only to California in variety of crops grown state-wide. Farming is HUGE in the D.

I'm actually OK with arranging books by color; I did it with my cookbooks. I remember what all the books look like, so it has made them easier for me to find, not harder.

Designing Your Space: TV, To Hide or Not to Hide
12/3/11 11:19 AM

The corner of my living room is the only place where I can store my TV. I still have my big old TV, in a cabinet style corner armoire that I bought on Craigslist and painted yellow. I prefer to hide the TV when it's not on. But I haven't found a good solution to hiding the TV in the corner of a room, outside of the armoire. Does anyone know of any?

Oh honestly, in the Midwest, the bungalow is the tract home of the early 20th century; it's not so precious. So if Alison doesn't want to fill it with Stickley furniture that's her prerogative. One of the nice things about MCM furniture is that it is small-scaled and usually affordable, so it works well in smaller rooms. When people do not mix styles, it tends to look like a renovator's showroom instead of a home.

I LOVE that you left the woodwork it's natural finish, Alison; that's why you get my vote! I have similar woodwork in my home, I'm always searching to see what others do with it, aside from painting it white. I've been slowly working my way around the rooms with Soygel each summer.

My daughter started college at U of Minnesota, and she's having a blast in your city. Go Gophers!

For bright white, I like Pratt and Lambert's designer white. I want to try marine paint on the trim in my bathroom. I like the high gloss and durability of it, reminds me of Mackinaw Island. Otherwise, I love love love, Benjamin Moore's satin impervo. It's a fabulous paint for the hardworking areas of the house; cupboards, windowsills, etc.; and it's self leveling if applied with a brush.
I installed wainscot in my bungalow home office; I used a custom color similar to bungalow white on the chair rail and baseboard, then I used Minwax wood sheen in dove white on the paneling to whitewash. It's not everyone's style, but I like seeing the wood grain and the whitewash kept it from looking too much like a deli. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1035208757873.2007476.1155077215&type=1#!/photo.php?fbid=2074426657671&set=a.1035208757873.2007476.1155077215&type=1&theater

For a vintage wall color, I would consult the bathrooms in Old House Journal.

I'm with jlc74, I'm usually getting ready to cringe when a dresser makeover is featured, but this one is really cool. I understand why it had to be done; Formica is a dealbreaker.

Too true JenneJoy! No mention of the completely fabulous Grand Rapids Art Museum, or University of Michigan Museum of Art, which are worth a visit for the buildings alone. I don't much about homes outside of Southeast Michigan to tour, but I'm surprised NOT to see Meadow Brook Hall, the Henry Ford Estate, or the Edsel and Elanor Ford House listed.
