Whenever I see Buddha sculptures gracing the chimney pieces/hallways/bathrooms of houses not inhabited by Buddhists, i.e., people for whom the object has no religious significance, I always feel this is rather disrespectful and wonder how I, a not particularly militant Catholic, would feel if I saw similar Catholic imagery/objects used merely as "decoration"... well, rather disturbed. Especially as these images in no way qualify as "art", they are mass-produced tat whose only significance is the religious feeling they invoke in the faithful (the Sistine Chapel comparison is therefore not apt). They can also be used ironically, as I think is the case in this instance -witness their being in the bathroom of all places, perhaps as a comment on the general tawdriness of religion and similar belief structures. If so, I think this is scoring a cheap point indeed. I would not be offended (and please realise that I am only mildly disturbed, no hand-wringing or outrage, just a slight nose-wrinkling in distaste) if it is meant as a personal comment on one's childhood, and the irony is tinged with affection. Obviously, then, I cannot endorse the "Jesus bathroom for everyone" manifesto. Amy & Keith's Candy-Coated Dollhouse House Tour |

Abby, what you should all do is find out what kind of dining table or chairs they really want and all club together to get it for them (or, say, one chair) depending on what you can afford. I have to agree with the Norwegian US resident. If the US is so horrible and other countries are so great, why is the US birthrate the only one above replacement level? I come from Spain, allegedly no. 13 in this report. Yes we have universal healthcare, there is free daycare for low income households (tho I have to say that this means VERY low income households, the rest of us have to pay...) 4 months paid leave etc. But still no one having any kids. The reason, IMO, is a huge lack of flexibility in the labour market, caused mostly by rigid severance pay policies and, yes, benefits. This means that if you have a kid a glass ceiling immediately pops up above you, your career drops a couple of gears and if you EVER decide to quit your job for a little more than the statutory 4 months that is the end of your life in the workforce. So no one is having any kids, at least no middle class people (not me, expecting my third as a self-employed translator). This is not the case in the US. I think the results are skewed, tho I agree that the infant death rate is pretty bad. The Best and Worst Places To Be A Mother | Apartment Therapy Ohdeedoh |

yes the obamas look lovely but, really, from an outsider's perspective (European) this oohing and aaahing over the style, general lovability, absolute superness of your President and his wife and the general tone of all your fawning comments is reminiscent of a court in an absolutist monarchy... Tatyana, at least you bring a welcome breeze of dissent and Patrick, yes, a little humour, finally!
