You missed the best cocktail app out there: Flip 'N Drink. Speaking as a former bartender, it has gorgeous photos, top notch recipes from one of the best cocktail revivalists out there, and cool facts about every drink. It also skips silly drinks and sticks to the classics, which is a plus that you don't have to wade through hundreds of college bar drinks to find the good ones. I'd love to have statues in my garden, but I can't stand statues such as those pictured. Where is the store selling (affordable) replicas of statues with clean lines and a more modern, or mid-century, feel? Statues such as those by Milles, Breker, Lachaise, Marini, Lehmbruck, Ban, etc. You can buy copies of paintings, vintage posters, etc. But copies of mid-century or modern statues don't seem to exist. All you can find are bad copies of classic statues and stuff that looks like it belongs in a Thomas Kincade painting. Blech! Standing Ground: Statues in the Garden Inspiration Gallery |

I have a functional fireplace but one we don't use often. I put a framed photo of a log fire in it. It's gotten a lot of good coments from visitors! What To Do With Non-Functional Fireplace? Good Questions |

We've had a white painted fireplace for 8 years now and no soot (and with only a screen). While I would not paint a whole brick wall, the brick fireplace surround, similar to yours, with drywall on both sides, looks so much better when painted white. While trying not to be rude, I agree that the title of this piece is grossly misleading. "Before & After" implies changes someone made to a room they decorated both before and after. It does not apply to rooms decorated by different people or to a room decorated for the first time (as in new construction). And it is very tacky to publish the interior of someone's home without their permission, especially when you publish it as the "bad" styling. Shame on everyone involved in deciding to do that. I have tried organizing my books in so many ways but nothing worked really well until I organized them in chronological order (by subject, so a modern biography of Cicero goes next to Cicero's own writings). I guess I am a nerd! 9 Ways to Organize Books: Which Is Your Style? |

Since this thread has been revived, I have to add to my prior comment about Netflix. Oddly, at the same time Netflix announced its new "instant-watch only" plan, they dropped a lot of movies and TV shows from their instant-watch list. And they dropped even more from that list as of January 1, 2011. Blu-Ray and Why It Doesn't Matter Anymore |

I have this vacuum. While it is very quiet, light, does a good job, and is cool looking (as if how a vacuum looks really matters), it also has some big flaws: bags are very expensive and fill up fast if you have pets, the lack of a power button on the handle gets old fast, it blows hot air up at your face if you get too near it, and, most annoyingly of all, the power cord is so short that you constantly have to switch outlets, even in a small house. So good vacuum but could be much better designed. Miele Neptune Is Now Available in Turquoise! |

I keep my Sennheisers in the case they came in. Not as good looking as the stand, but not as stupidly expensive either. For $179 you could buy three decent Grado headphones. This puts form waaay over function (and over reason too). Sieveking Sound Omega Headphone Stand Daily Find |

I have to give Bose credit for making audio easy to set up (color coded connections, etc.), easy to use, and unobtrusive enough to disappear into a room. And their marketing is amazing, if somewhat misleading. Other audio companies should take note of their good points. Bose VideoWave: How Does 16 Built-in Speakers Sound? Turn On or Turn Off? |

What a horrible idea. I can understand the desire to hide a TV as I don't like the prime focus of a room to be some piece of tech. But design should not interfere with function and this does. Put the TV behind a painting, in a closet, in a tall dresser, etc. but not in a low fireplace! How To: Hide Your TV Monitor with Style |

I like Office and don't think that the free alternatives are nearly as useful. But I object to the price of Office, especially as new versions of Office don't support add ons for prior versions such as the foreign language paks that are not cheap themselves. If you upgrade Office, you also have to upgrade all your language paks, which is a lousy thing for a business to do to its customers. Can You Live & Work Without Microsoft Office? |

I wish the media would get their terms right: a "home theater" is a space dedicated to movies; a "media room" is what you mean here. And neither of these spaces is even half-way decent. Lousy speakers (or none), bad speaker placement, bad TV placement in the upper photo, hard surfaces that mess up the sound, etc. It does not take a lot of money to make a good media room, but it does require following some basic audio and video rules. And decor and design seldom play an important role in whether a HT or media room is actually any good for audio or video. I wish you'd leave decor issues to your sister site and pay a bit more attention on this site to whether a space provides good audio and video presentation. An Ideal Modern Home Theater Setup |

I think an off-center TV (that swings into a correct viewing position) is much better than a permanently centered TV that is hung too high. But both TVs in these photos seem too high, regardless of whether either of them swings to one side or the other. Design should not impede use, though all too many people seem to put design over usability when it comes to audio and video. Would an Off Center Television Drive You Bonkers? |
