@Spencer Thanks, and the lamps were found as is at a Hancock Fabrics of all places (this was years ago though). Lisa's Small Space in a Swanky Neighborhood Small Cool Contest |

@sistervashti You're right :) It's not noisy at all by us, but we're a block back and down a bit from the busiest parts (even those probably wouldn't be *too* bad noise-wise, but parking would be a gigantic pain!) . We're totally planning on fleeing town come Grand Old Days this year. Lisa's Small Space in a Swanky Neighborhood Small Cool Contest |

For all the "That's not small!" comments, please keep in mind Apartment Therapy picks out the post titles so I'm really not trying to claim how tiny our apartment is. While I certainly don't see our apartment as "huge" (at least for Mpls/St Paul) it's a very comfortable size for 2 people (+2 cats who tend to stampede). @thedistrict I seriously debated if I should even bothering entering since it's more of a work in progress than showcase but then I figured I could keep on telling myself that indefinitely (and I don't really want to live in showcase) so why not just dive on in? The coffee table was one of my favorite finds! It was in a kitschy little vintage store and (badly) spray-painted gloss back so I stripped it down and refinished it. First year I finally have an apartment I'm happy enough with to enter! It's still a work in progress (aren't they always?) but I decided to dive in this year anyway! Enter Now: Small Cool 2013 |

Lovely mesh of the styles--feminine but not fussy. I have to say though, I cringe every time I hear microfiber referred to as "pet friendly." I hate microfiber for a bunch of reasons, but mostly because it was it was the worst fabric ever to have around pets that shed (and I've had a dog and now a cat who were/are champion shedders). Our current couch is twill which is hands down my favorite. Combining Styles: Laura & Dan Shopping Guide for a Happy Couple |

I think it's awesome and a little quirky! If you love you should totally get it--your apartment, your choice in decor. I know I've picked up some things that have made my friends think I've gone a little crazy but ultimately they see in the space and recognize that it just works (or if they don't, too bad :P). I also agree with those who said once you buy it you can do whatever you want to it. It doesn't exactly appear to be a priceless antique (and personally I think the current coloring looks like a bad spray paint job). I'd go gloss white if it were me, but bright yellow could be an awesome accent color for your room as well. Thumbs Up for Horse Head Lamp? Good Questions |

I cannot stress enough how important is to read reviews of a potential landlord! I didn't and it was a horrible experience. Poor/non responsive maintenance, roaches, bedbugs, back door missing from the building for MONTHS in a not exactly stellar part of town... the list goes on. I ended up having to sue to get my security deposit back and now the jerk is dealing with judgement against him by ignoring it. Awesome. I agree with the 1&2 combo idea--keep the chairs both facing the couch, but have the couch under the window. It fills the space so much better. 1, 2 or 3? Furniture Layout for New Living Room Good Questions |

I happen to love this trend... but then I'm a typography nerd who's always had a weakness for ampersands so I might be biased :) The Trend Continues: Letters in Decor |

I loooove the Beahouse pots! They're gorgeous and have the perfect, fine mesh filter. If you prefer brewing by the cup, you can always buy just a fine mesh filter for a mug which is what I normally do (way better than the tea ball). Take 5: Perfect Loose Leaf Tea Brewers |

Some craft stores have better color selections than hardware stores. I can't say I've made a detailed study, but I remember seeing much nicer colors at Michaels vs Home Depot. Before & After: Rusty & Dusty Bar Cart Gets A Mod Makeover snag |

You could try spraying the plants with Bitter Yuck (I've had better luck with it than Bitter Apple). Just be warned, it's potent stuff--if I so much as pick up the bottle and then eat something with hands ages afterward I can still taste the stuff (even a good scrubbing doesn't seem to help if I've been spraying it). You can TOTALLY salvage this! Based on several laminate painting tutorials I've read, sanding the crap out it will help with the durability of the finish. For you it will also help even out the existing beat-up finish. If you don't already have one, invest in a palm sander (they're cheap, plus you'll thank me later). Use a GOOD primer (I believe Zinser Cover Stain is the top recommendation for cover laminate). I would also suggest cutting down some thin (1/4"-1/8") sheets of wood (or MDF) to cover the caning... or some funky paintable wallpaper if you want to make it a bit more mod. IKEA is a great source for cheap, standard sized frames. If you're not near an IKEA, or have something odd-sized Michaels sells frames in sections--pick your length, pick your width, have your hardware store cut some glass to size, do some super-basic assembly and Ta-Da! Michaels also has a good selection of standard frames as well; they're often on sale and if not they ALWAYS have 40-50% coupons. Don't be fooled by their 60% off custom framing coupons though--it's still stupid expensive (what they wanted to charge me $150 for--after coupon--I was able to do for around $30 with the frame sections + glass). 10 Large Art Prints Under $60 |

I'm in agreement with a few other commenters: while the shopping experience can be a factor in shopping (especially when it comes to staff helpfulness/knowledge) it's not only factor in most people's shopping decisions. If this is going to be a regular feature on AT it'd be nice to get a price point as well. Quality and ease of use/installation would be great too but I can see that being more difficult if you're more or less window shopping. Battle for the Best: Closet System Shopping Experience |

Oddly enough I tend to use the DIY versions for heavier cleaning. Method's Orla Kiely special edition in pear smells AMAZING (and cute bottle bonus!) so that's my general surface cleaner (Mrs Meyer's Basil and Lemon-Verbana are close seconds). Method's wood cleaner was great for my floors too but I'm having a hard time finding it for some reason so I've switched to Murphy's Oil Soap. For the DEEP cleaning I bust out the vinegar/Dawn mix--it's effortlessly removes accumulated grease from my range and hood, and soap scum and discoloration from the tub. Vinegar/baking soda is also the way to go if you need a more abrasive cleaner. The only thing I haven't been able to replace is a toilet bowl cleaner. DIY or Buy: Natural & Eco-Friendly Cleaners |

I am actually SO glad I didn't end up deep cleaning the floors this weekend--our cats decided last night was when they were going to learn to shred the garbage bags that were waiting to be taken to the dumpster on the way out to our cars. It wasn't pretty and if it had happened on freshly cleaned floors I would have been even more furious with them. Now I can just shrug it off and say "oh well, it's on the cure to do list anyway." I also love the idea of sitting where the cats normally sit... although in my apartment that means a box next to the radiator in the dining room or on top of a bookshelf. Day 4: 10 Minutes Critiquing My Living Room Liveblogging the January Cure |
