If you really want to be amused, take a Geiger counter into a kitchen with granite countertops. It's not harmful, but it's funny to see people's reactions. The Renter's Dilemma: Ugly, Ubiquitous Granite Countertops |

My relatively recent (less than 5 years old) fridge doesn't have exposed condenser coils. I went through the trouble of pulling it out to vacuum as you suggest, and I was most disappointed. Thinking they might have been on the bottom I checked there too, but no. I suspect this may be true for many modern refrigerators. Next time I'm at a home improvement store I think I'll look to see if I just got lucky or if they've just come up with more efficient designs. 5 Tips to Make Your Refrigerator More Efficient |

I'm with seattleallie... I can't wait for the Rainiers to hit the farmer's markets around Seattle. So delicious! And if you happen to cross the Cascades there are plenty of operators who have farm stands at the orchards. Washington Cherries: From Orchard To Pie |

I'll never forget what a revelation it was to see one of these in New Zealand for the first time. Back then we didn't have these in the US, or at least they were very rare. Now I consider it an essential appliance. As to price, there are decent stainless steel ones available at Costco for less than $30. Electric Kettles: Should You Buy One? |

So what if some people consider it wacky or weird? Lots of traditions are, and that's what makes them charming. I didn't grow up with this tradition but I have no doubt others would find some of my food-related ones weird as well. I hope you don't dismiss this as wacky, but instead embrace it as part of your heritage. Even if you don't partake of it yourself. Butter Lamb for Easter: Traditional or Wacky? |

@Bruce... The only thing I can assume is that Bob's Red Mill is using a different type of corn. If you use hominy, like most grits, soaking them in lye to release the nutritive value usually also bleaches them somewhat. When I see yellow "grits" I just assume it's really polenta. @MLaura... it's not wasteful to buy in bulk or when things are on sale. For example, I eat a lot of rice. I buy it in 25 lb bags. It's much cheaper than buying it 1 lb at a time. And like most dry goods it doesn't go bad if properly stored. Weekend Meditation: Emptying Out the Pantry |

'Tis the season for emptying the pantry. I've been finding things I didn't buy and have no idea how they got there. I suspect friends who cooked for me when I was ill. Including the aforementioned creamed corn that everyone seems to hate so much. I used it to make cornbread. And it turned out surprisingly well. Weekend Meditation: Emptying Out the Pantry |

I start with cold water and bring to a boil, and let it boil for 7 minutes. Then an immediate bath in ice water. Odd thing is, I could swear I read about that method here the last time you did a "how to" on how to boil eggs... How to Hard-Boil an Egg |
