Our advent calendar: a ribbon garland of mini-stockings (actually, Christmas themed, or other brightly colored, children's socks from the dollar bins), one for each of the twenty-four days leading up to Christmas. Each one is filled with a small toy, treat, or activity that my daughter can do. My daughter often prefers the activities (call a relative to say I love you; breathe on the window and watch it frost over; make a present for someone; spin around twelve times & make a wish for each turn) to small treats or toys she finds. It looks festive, and is the right balance of DIY and store-bought for my hectic holiday season.

And, if I could, once more: the stark typography works to balance out the softness of the rest of the room. Every room should have something that doesn't "go" in the room, imho. But, in this case, the black in the typography is echoed in the deep charcoals of the seat cushion, the roof of the doll house, and the mountains in the black & white photograph, so to say it doesn't "go" would not necessarily be fair in this case.

Oh, sorry. Just realized that's an elevations map. I still approve. ;)

Beautiful room! I totally get the curtains; they close off the sleeping space from the play space very nicely, and they do make a great stage/fort/tent for pretend-play. The topographical map is awesome in that it, in addition to working very well in the room, offers a view of what the land actually looks like from an aerial view, vs. a geographical map, which children also need to see so they can distinguish between topographical and political boundaries. But, that's all just a tangent that I went on. It's a beautiful, sophisticated, intelligent, girly space for a little girl to live in. Great job!

I bought "Robin Hood," starring Errol Flynn and Olivia Dehaviland (sp?) for my husband and was surprised that our (then) 4 year old took a great interest in it, asking to watch it over and over again. She (did I mention that she's a girl?) even had me make her a Robin Hood costume for Halloween that year, complete with bow, arrows, and quiver, making hers the most envied costume of every dad in the neighborhood….

I did my homework using the design tools on the Elfa website for the first closet project I ever did, but, sadly, couldn't afford the finished design. I wound up executing that design using the less expensive Closetmaid systems from Home Depot. Since then, I've stuck with the Closetmaid systems for two apartments and a house. For those on a smaller budget, it's a great and functional option that, when done right, doesn't differ much in look from the Elfa systems.

I LOVE my wire shelving. It has followed us through two moves, and we always find a use for it. I have had a wire desk work space, a wire sewing room, and, of course, various configurations of wire shelf storage. We've recently incorporated the use of S-hooks to hang things from wire shelves in our apartment, further expanding their use. I love your example of using them for pot storage--thanks so much for the tip!

I'm late to the party on this one, but I just pinned about a third of the photos from this tour. This place is just freaking fabulous! I will revisit it often!

Neighbors don't need to be friendly to one another, but they should look out for one another. My husband and our old neighbor became good friends based on real neighborly gestures: taking a delivery for one another once in a while, or shoveling the other's walk when doing his own. I'd stop trying to strike up conversations and just bring in their garbage can for them every once in a while. If the neighbor doesn't reciprocate, or at least say thank you, then just stop. It's no loss!

Thank you so much for featuring a kid's room for an older child! Much as I love them, we're a bit past the nursery stage in my house. Not only did you do a great job on the design, creating a light and airy, yet boyish room that deserves the enthusiasm he's so obviously expressing, but it's also great to see considerations such as homework space and media access considered in a child's room. Thanks again!

I LOVE the idea of a navy on that house! Seconds here on that color!

Exterior Paint Colors with Light Gray Roof? Good Questions

This may defeat the ecological benefits of having a light-colored roof, but, when faced with a similar situation, we painted our home a dark, fudgy brown with eggshell trim. The mailbox was oxidized brass and the house numbers were polished brass. Our house was black with white trim when we bought it, and after living with it for several years, we decided to warm things up and go for a bit of a richer look when we repainted.

Ha! I remember doing this in 9th grade biology class, and getting completely grossed out by seeing the process. I think I might try this with my kids soon!

I'm not really into the idea of concrete flooring in a child's room, but I'm REALLY into this idea for my garage floor! This is great to keep in mind for my next house!

The water-filled plastic bag thing works. We lay them on the tables at family picnics. The caveat is that they do have to be out in full sun to be effective. When a cloud blocks the sun, or shade moves over the tables, the flies return.

This is an awesome list, and the comments were just as helpful! I have one tip to add for storing medication (which, I wouldn't store in the fridge unless the label says to do so). We stored our medications in an over-the-door shoe organizer with clear pockets. This offered multiple organization options; our medicines were organized by use (pain relievers, cough meds, first aid supplies etc.), by age (kids meds separate from adults), and even by person (prescription meds). We had a child safety lock at the top of the linen closet door to keep little finger out….

Thank you so much for the tip! I am working with my first ever herb garden this year, and hadn't had much luck with my first attempts at drying herbs. This looks like a great alternative for preserving what I've grown. I'm afraid that this tip comes a bit too late for my basil, this year, though. Does anyone know if the basil that's still out on my balcony is still any good after all of these record high temperatures?
