Artist Barry "Twist" McGee does an art installation of untitled drawings very much like this--check it out:

I like it because it looks like it could keep growing as needed...

Hot Enough For Ya?

damonq9...
I have two words for you about living in NoHo--heat and smog.
It's always a good ten degrees cooler at the beach and you can always walk outside and breathe on the weekend, and when you come home.
I wouldn't live anywhere in L.A., except the beach :)

However, by having a Santa Monica address, you might be paying for amenities that it sounds like you don't use, or value--Like better schools than LAUSD, its own fire dept., and police dept.--its own dog parks, too.

If you want better value at the beach, you might look in Venice.
You don't mention what you're paying, but you can get an approx. 600 square foot, 1 bdr, 1 ba, duplex, with tankless (read: never runs out of hot H2o) water heater, full wood floors throughout, newer fridge, newer gas stove, gas powered new w/d in its own (tiny) laundry room, with a 120 square foot private outdoor deck and a beautiful garden, fairly quiet neighbors (barking dogs and absent owners are everywhere) west of Lincoln but in Venice, bordering Santa Monica(so you can still walk to the beach, even if you can't see it--you can hear the drummers on Sundays, though) for about $2100.00 monthly. That's pretty much market value in Venice.

I know, because I rent one :)

Hmmmm....Interesting...But then wouldn't the bed itself be blocking the doors? (I may have to move things around tomorrow to see if this works)
:o)
Yep, I have been looking at all things persimmon-y, but right now my poor louis chair looks like an orange safety beacon! Not exactly what I was after!

Thanks Sea--Yes, eventually we would like to re-do the whole thing (need $$)
It's actually french doors, not a window so I don't like to block the egress...the "dresser" is actually an old fashioned linen cabinet, only 10" deep--(cast off of a past roommate)

oceandreamer56, the wall in the LR with the mirrors is chocolate brown, as are the window coverings, so not sure about "all brown, all the time"...

Thank you all so much for taking the time to look and respond!!

Thankyouthankyou!!
I love this idea!! O.K., not to sound like a total suck-up, but I was really hoping you would chime in patrick (t.o.o.)...
You're sort of the Simon Cowell of AT (meaning your critiques are right AND helpful)...
I may have my weekend project :)

O.K., what about a pop of color in the LR?

I painted the Louis XVI chair persimmon recently, and put a square canvas of the same color on top of the mantel, but it isn't totally working...(painted to see the color--before I can actually recover)...I wanted to use this color in the hallway, too (what ever color it turns out to be), but again, persimmon and that green is a little too much like neon Christmas...

What color could I do in the bedroom?

The headboard is a crazy sort of Mad Hatter-ish tufted moss green velvet (same as the drapes, but the color is off on my monitor), and I have a big, rather baroque gold framed mirror on the floor in the corner...Bedside lamps are white..
The bed has an attachment to the headboard that creates a place to hang curtains...

The bedroom was essentially mine from when I lived alone (Alice-in-Wonderland meets Jeanie's bottle was my inspiration),
but Nico is all about sleek and modern...

I doubt with all the fierce competition you'll get to see any more photos, so I'm going to pick all of your brains while I can!! :)

Thanks Edan!

This is just what I need to inspire my S/O to help me repaint ;) I'm tired of the lavender...

The chair is ancient (and ugly, and ripped to shreds by my cat) but it's comfy---so it's draped until I can afford to re-cover...
And I've had my doubts about that lamp, too...Beware buying lamps from a catalog!

Oh it's fun to see your own place on here :)

Potted wheat grass is from the local Ralph's grocery (much cheaper than flowers)

Yes to the legroom eec007--When we open the cabinet doors (like in the photo) there are 23.5 inches from the bottom inside cabinet to the bottom of the inside shelf--I'm sitting there right now :)

Please don't hesitate to give me constructive criticism!!! IT's lovely to hear the positive, but it's sometimes the negative that really helps...I can take it ;)--I've seen so many amazing spaces on this website, and I think the main benefit of this contest is all these critical design eyes to help with what you may not notice about your own place...

I went to see this exhibit yesterday--It is a very ironic look at the urban sprawl that is L.A. Definitely worth while, and while you're at the marvelous Getty, be sure to check out Tim Hawkinson's new works called "Zoopsia" in the same space as Humble's photos. He is a new age mad scientist with a sense of humour...
The gardens are spectacular right now, too--All this for $8.00 a carload parking...

The decor is just amazing...beautiful, and sophisticated, without being stuffy.

Is there a designated dining area, or is it all just breakfasts in bed, and manhattans and hors d'oeuvres on the sofa?

Want to see that innovation--I'll bet he's got some somewhere :)

No, no no, Manuel--you misunderstand--I wasn't saying that it looks like you had pro photos taken, or were trying to "cheat", or anything else like that :) --I was trying to say that sometimes what looks like it would work (in a photo), actually doesn't.
And I was generalizing--talking about many photos I've seen, here on this site, as well as in photo shoots in other venues.

For me, it's not about codes--it's about comfort. I wouldn't know a code if it looked me in the face :)

Given this, if your space is comfortable for you, then it works for you. I wouldn't have been happy in last year's winner either (One Space) and living so vertically--But that's what makes the world go 'round :)

PLEASE tell us where/how you made the über large photo booth strip!!--that is just so so so fun and retro/hip...If I had that I would make it a serious focal point in my apartment...I would put it up even if it was of strangers... :)

I've been looking at the floor plan, and I can't figure out how you enter the apartment...Do you have to walk on the white rug between the coffee table and the couch, between the table and Eames rocker, or is there enough space behind the rocker?

How do you raise/lower the window covering/clean the window that is behind the large shelving unit?

And is the white Ikea unit stable enough that it won't fall if someone sits "energetically" back on the sofa? Or is it anchored to the floor?

Sometimes I look at the photos on this site, and I wonder about practicality...I know that's pretty boring of me :)

Good design, for me, includes ease of use, and takes traffic flow into account. Most adult humans need a minimum of 24" of width in traffic areas, (about half that between a coffee table and couch where you aren't actually traversing, just sort of sliding in and sitting)

If you don't leave enough room to move comfortably, your place will feel like an obstacle course, even if it looks like a showroom.

Professional photo spreads "cheat" with this all the time and juxtapose pieces for the shoot that don't actually "live" there--They also remove pipes under sinks, and wiring, etc.

But this site is about Real Life apartments, where Real People live, n'est-ce pas?

What are you a designer of, Manuel?

Hi mckenna
Something that worked for us re exposed W/D in the kitchen area...

We bought Ikea cabinet doors (you can buy the doors separate from the cabinets--we used two 15"x64" pull-out pantry doors on the bottom, and two 15"x24" doors on the top) then built an open front/open back box around the W/D with particle board, (bracing the back, of course) and attached the cabinet doors. This also gave us additional storage for the soap, dryer sheets, etc., and we use a fold-flat type hamper which we store right there, too.
The bottom is covered by a kick panel which stays in place through pressure--you just need to cut it the exactly right size for the space.

Your cabinets probably aren't Ikea, but you might be able to do the same thing with other makers--or find a close match at Ikea. Sometimes a cabinet maker will have an option for a refrigerator box that might fit.

This was a much lower cost option than having someone build custom cabinets for us, and it really looks good! It also helps to cut the sound when the unit is in operation.

About the T.V. area...Could you put the stuff that is next to the T.V. (is it a stereo, or DVD or something) IN the white cabinet, rather than ON it? Then put the super cool flat screen (I'm jealous--we're saving for one) on the wall above, like a painting?

Cat furniture is something my cat has just learned to do without--She gets to use our furniture, and the occasional grocery bag and cardboard box. She gets bored with everything after awhile anyway, so I don't think she's truly abused :)

I think about window coverings this way: Long and dark make a place look more formal, long and sheer make it look more romantic, and shades (like Roman blinds or the like) are more tailored, and less formal.
You also don't need to think about ONLY covering the windows--drapes can be a way to add color to a whole wall (think of a theater).

I think your place has lots of potential--maybe we could see some pics after you're through? (although if you're like me, you're never THROUGH :) )
