The chairs are from Futurama Furniture (http://www.futuramafurniture.net/)

The things are in the closet which is bigger than you might think. I also use pretty much every drawer and cabinet to the fullest extent. Not to mention that my computer printer is in the oven (I don't cook too much.)

Thanks for the comments. I must say it is hard to watch the competition this year from the sidelines. I guess its time for me to move so I can start work on a totally new apartment and enter the competition again. ;-)

Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Smallest Coolest Contest Reminder and a 2007 Flashback
4/14/08 1:51 PM

In regards to:

"I was hesitant to enter this contest because most of the entries feature a very modern, minimalist look. Hopefully people will like something different!"

I would like to point out that Ron's Hotel "Sweet" which took 4th place in last years contest was what some would call a "maximalist" style. I think this contest has a love of both the modern minimilist style and more traditional styles. In fact just read the comments of the modern minimalist apartments and you will find people commenting on both sides of the coin.

Check out Ron's Hotel "Sweet" for reference to "something different" done to perfection. Certainly it isn't my style at all, but you have to admit he did an amazing job with his place. [http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/small-cool-2007-entries/east-semifinalist-1-rons-hotel-sweet-022909]

As for your place, I love seeing entries in this size range. This is where you really have to be creative, when you get under the 300sqft zone. This is where things become challenging. I like that you stick to a theme, although I wish there were more cohesiveness and purpose. Overall, good job for a style that I don't really like ;-)

firecracker: thanks for you comment, I hadn't seen Arthur's house tour before and I went and looked at it and read the comments...I must say WHOA what a thread.

Again I feel I should put a disclaimer on my comments, that I intend no malice in what I say, but merely to bring up thoughtful discussion of "what makes good interior design?"

My intent at posting the prices of those pieces was NOT to say, "hey this guy is rich and I hate people who can just buy whatever they want." It was however intended to say, "WOW with that kind of money imagine what ELSE he could have done rather than flip through the DWR catalog."

Here is a question for you all, would you hire this person as your own interior designer? (Yes yes I understand that you probably wouldn't hire one at all, because we all here design our own spaces) But just for the thought of it, would you hire him? I mean, what would he do for you, just flip open the catalog and say, "your apartment will be delivered next Tuesday morning between 8 and Noon."

I wish this discussion could be detacted from the current competition because I don't want this to be personal, I just would rather people not be so amazed by trite, overused, under-creative, cliche' design all bought from a single source. I could put this apartment together in a day.

[As a side note, people need to not be so concerned with the feelings of the submitter, it is a contest, and we don't HAVE to go around patting each other on the back if we actually don't like the space right? However, I recognize that there can and should be a line drawn, that line some would call "tact" and if I am offending people, I sincerely apologize.]

Wow, I feel so bad about this entry and its comments. I think we all get that the photos could have been better revealing of the space. Its probably tough when you enter the contest and come to see your comments to get a feel of how you did on your DESIGN, and all you find out is that people feel that you took lousy pictures.

I don't like the decal on the large mirrors of a woman. Just a personal preference, and probably because I am a guy. The space is very girlie. I do however appreciate the myriad of colors and patterns, which to some may be overkill, but I feel like it is part of your personality showing through in your design. So I like that.

Another space with the TV on top of the fireplace, you should rethink the TV placement.

I am also guessing that you didn't show certain parts of your apartment because you hoped to get into the finals and maybe reveal other amazing parts of the space to "crush" the competition in the finals, (maybe that is just my optimism) but sadly it looks as though the crowd of commenters didn't see it that way.

Overall a great space to be proud of for sure.

Wow, what a fun apartment. I love that rocking chair and the whole thing just makes me want to chill out. I also love being able to see your passion for Pearl Jam displayed on the wall. I like that if I want to relax, I can be lounging in the living room, but if I am in a more fast paced mood, the kitchen area is so bright and exciting.

Great space.

nwlane: Not impressively miserable, just impressively critical.

Just for shits and giggles I went to dwr.com and typed in every piece of furniture that I could see in these photos and WOW to my amazement, they were all there. I could put together this entire apartment from the comfort of my laptop and internet connection (minus the cool art and artifacts, which I do like a lot, but in my opinion are not enough to make this a serious contender).

So here we go (from dwr.com):
Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad: $877
LEM Piston Stools: $660 each
Swan Chair - Classic Leather: $5702 each
LC2 Petit Modele Three Seat Sofa: $7100
Nelson Platform Bench: $699
Eames Aluminum Management Chair: $1129

So someone show me what makes this space creative? When you say: "the most beautiful aspect of the apartment is the light." I am assuming you mean the light coming from the window which is great, but that isn't YOUR creativity. (Not saying that natural light CANT be creative, just that you didn't do anything particularly with the natural light other than what the architect intended it to do.)

Katrina58 said it best.

p.s. I love the classics too, but they are at this point sadly cliche'

Favorite so far. The layout of the bed across from the sitting area is genius for the shape and size of the apartment. Plus the couch is unique and sized perfectly for the space. I like that the two chairs on the other side of the coffe table could easily be turned around to watch the projection TV. I wonder if light from the window ever washes out the TV and if there is a solution for blocking the light if you wish to watch something during the day. Also I love the nook used for a small office space. Very clean with a calm and comfortable feel.

Hello DWR Showroom. Man I am BORED! Being an architect I would think you would have more creativity than just the standard MCM Classics. Whoop-D-Do. There are sooo many beautiful and creative contemporary pieces you could have had in this space. I would think most architects would be up with all the latest furniture designs and not so stuck with all the icons of the past.

Not only that, the space is huge, and nothing jumps out and says to me, "hey thats a very creative use of a small space."

Did you do anything creative with the walls....Nope.
Did you do any creative window treatment....Nope.
Did you do anything creative with the kitchen...Nope.

I am sure the kitchen came that way and all you did was put a mask at the end of that wall. So what exactly is so special about this place?

I hate that my comments have to be so negative, but I see no creativity here. Maybe the bedroom/bathroom would change my opinion.

p.s. Props for the didgeridoo.
p.p.s. Just trying to be honest, not rude. This contest is for laying everything you have out on the table and getting honest anonymous feedback from the internet in return.

Pixie, I agree. I do minor cleaning everyday, because my space is so small clutter can easily get out of control. However I usually reserve one day a week to seriously clean the entire (390 sq ft) apartment.

I voted "Every day." because compared to most people they probably consider my minor daily cleaning to be real cleaning.

I just want to say thanks for everyone at the party making it worth it to drive all the way from Barstow. What and awesome community we have with ATLA. I can't wait to see more events from them. Congratulations to all the Los Angeles entries in the competition, I think we proved that NY isn't the only design mecca and that amateurs can hold their own with professionals. I truly was inspired by this competition and can't wait until next year when I can be merely a spectator.

Thank You!

Haha, thanks for the great comment. Luckily that beautiful girlfriend of mine shares the same vision and without the two of us this space wouldn't be anywhere close to where we want it to be. Ammo, you are the most amazing girl in the world, and this apartment reflects that. Your determination is unmatchable.

Everyone: thanks for all the great comments so far, it makes all the hard work worth it and I hope you get to meet Ammo tomorrow at the party. Sadly, I am out of town on work, so I will miss you all. Good luck and congratulations to all the other contestants, I am sure you all feel that your hard work has paid off as well.

Mar,

We usually eat where the laptops are, we just push the laptops back and eat sitting on the ottoman.

Oh, and sure, come on out to our next party. Although last time we got a noise complaint :(

Others,

So far the bed has not been an issue. Many people just sit on the edge of it like it is just another couch or something. I can't imagine sectioning it off, becase the space is SO small it would really hurt the size of the space. I guess that is just one of the downfalls of a studio.

Again, thanks for all the feedback. Keep it coming!

To everyone,

Thank you so far for the amazing comments I feel like that churning feeling in my stomach can finally stop now.

To answer some of the questions:

There is a plain brown rug that sits beside the piano. You can see a small part of it in the second photo at the bottom. It is a 5x7 so it fills a large amount of space.

We keep all of our "stuff" in that closet (she has one side, I have the other) and basically every single cabinet in the apartment. We do have a so called "junk drawer". The key has just been to stay organized, don't keep things that aren't necessary for living, and spend a little time tidying up each day. It would blow your mind how well Ammo can organize a closet.

We do live here! Yes seriously we do, come to our next party!

"No books? No music? No nothing?" I knew this one would come up. I have a library card and a blockbuster pass. Music is stored on an iPod or we listen to satellite radio. If I do buy a book, I almost always give them away to friends. We do not have a TV we just watch movies on our laptops. We have 4 skateboards and 2 snowboards. The two snowboards are under the bed, and the skateboards usually sit at the front door or in the back of the car.

The lighting is very warm and although the pictures represent a very dramatic lighting we built two very large floating light panels that provide very warm ambient light.

Ali, not only did we paint the walls, we built the light panels (see picture 2 hallway), made the curtains and valances from scratch, and many other DIY projects that made this unit what it is.

Again, thanks for the feedback! I love it! This is so much fun already.

Mark,

Thanks for the clarification. You are right, I just tried again and was not able to increase the vote count. Thanks. I am glad to know the voting will be fair.

Foolproof your voting system is not. I just want to point out, that by deleting your cookies you can vote as many times as you want.

For people reading this, give it a try and see what you think. If you are in internet explorer go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files -> Delete Cookies. Refresh the page, re-login, and re vote. Anyone could create a dummy account a vote up any entry they wanted.

You guys could be logging IP address and UserNames, but it is just as easy to prevent this from being possible in the first place. I really hate to be the downer, but before we get this thing going you really ought to tighten this glaring hole in your voting system.

Also, if you have multiple browsers on your computer, (IE, Opera, Firefox) you can vote from each of them without even deleting your cookies.

Please please please, heed this warning, or else people will forever think that the contest is unfair. This contest is considered by most people to be the most important amateur design contest on the internet. Everyone wants to gain exposure, prove themselves, and show the world that even amateur designers can pull off professional spaces. AT, please put as much effort towards this contest as the people who enter it are putting forth.

This message has been forwarded to support.

Small Cool 2007 : Hanging Chad Test

Also, with a three day voting system, if your entry gets posted on a Friday, does that mean you get Friday, Saturday Sunday, as the days people are allowed to vote? If so, then Friday people will be screwed compared to Monday people considering that the blogosphere pretty much shuts down on the weekends. Maybe Friday posted entries should get Monday for voting too.

Also, if people have to register in order to vote, instead of using a CAPTCHA system, by the end of the contest the pool of voters will be significantly larger than the pool of voters at the beginning. Thus making the people who turned their entries in on time at a disadvantage.

Lastly, the contest page still shows a deadline of April 6th. Maybe if you changed that to the new deadline, people would realize that they can still enter the contest.

Sorry, this really isn't bitching, and I know you guys are doing everything in your power to be fair, but these are just some of the things that are going to come up once this thing starts taking off.
