Try nothing at all. I have a spectacular art deco mantle and it looks like a big, marvelous sculpture with nothing on it.

Just say no to nasty microwave popcorn. Try the real thing next time. It's cheap and easy. Use any high sided covered saucepan. Add enough oil to just coat the bottom (I use a tablespoon or two of heart healthy olive oil). Add enough kernels of any popping corn to cover the pan bottom one kernel deep (less is OK). Every kernel must touch the bottom of the pan. Cover and put on stove burner at high heat. Wait till you hear the first kernel pop then gently shake the pan while the rest of the kernels pop. After a few minutes the popping will trail off to less than one pop per second. Turn off the heat and remove the cover. In a big bowl add salt & butter to taste (I like it with a bit of grated Parmesan). If you are used to microwave popcorn this will be the best popcorn you've tasted and pennies for a big bowl!

Mom used to use 7up. Go easy on the bleach, you only need a few drops. Smash woody stems with a hammer or mallet.

I didn't quit smoking after 30 years just so some designer label could tell me my tobacco stained walls were not stained at all! They're patinated! I simply can't stop laughing at the ludicrous notion of people paying good money for a product to make your walls look dirty! Am I crazy? Is it just me?</A>

The wife sits at a cramped little desk in the kitchen practically ON TOP of the double side by side oven! Her husband meanwhile stretches out full-length on a comfy divan next to a cozy fireplace. A picture is indeed worth 1000 words.

A point on design. Well made cabinets should last a generation or more. Appliances, electric and plumbing have potentially much shorter life cycles. Keep this in mind to get the most value and design you cabinetry to support future changes. For example, a block of cabinets/counter with large appliances at each end creates flexible space/size for appliances without requiring new cabinets or counters.

That's Sea Cliffs' view, with a wide angle lens. Robin Williams lives nearby. On the west side of Sea Cliff is a gorgeous golf course and the fine arts museum at the Legion of Honor. Nice neighborhood.

Use a reversible technique and cover the fireplace. Tack furring strips in the MORTAR to glue drywall to. Use construction adhesive on the furring strips, cover the whole thing with drywall, spackle, sand and paint to match the walls. The original, undamaged fireplace is underneath and can easily be restored should the desire arise.
