Whattha. I left a design blog recently over her overtly religious posts. Don't make me leave Apartment Therapy over unnecessary and irrelevant posts.

@WILLIAMSWEYR, You must live in a place without seasons. Most of the things my partner and I store are winter coats, scarves, gloves, and other winter accessories.

Before & After: Mid-Century Dresser Repainted
10/25/10 2:11 PM

This feels really, really silly to me. "Your friends think you are tough"??? Ugh. This "Your place looks more attractive"... Doesn't matter how tough your friends think you are or how "attractive" your place LOOKS... if it's 90 degrees inside, your snobby friends aren't going to care how attractive it looks inside... because they're going to stick around the apartments with A/C. Not to mention that I've done a damn good job of making my apartment attractive looking, a/c or no.

And: "summer sounds are more noticeable"?? I sleep with TWO sound machines and a fan year-round to drown out the sound of reggaeton and cat-calling on my (beautiful, wonderful) street while I sleep.

All in all, I'd much rather have a/c and have the TWO benefits of: being able to sleep more than one hour a night, and not sweating out all of my body's water in one hour, than engage in a contest with my roommates and suffer these five "benefits."

Bitter? You bet. I've spent two summers in NYC without A/C and I can't stop talking about how awesome it is now that I have it.

I had no idea that Duke's was a southern thing. I grew up in North Carolina and can't STAND any mayonnaise but Duke's. Hellman's tastes like death in my mouth.

Veganaise tastes very similarly to Duke's, and was my topping of choice when I was vegan. Still eat is occasionally (more often than actual mayo, in fact).

for the record, troseph's comment was the best ("You can't be serious." posted by troseph on March 9th 2010 at 10:05am)

ANYWAY.

white and black. so easy:
get some white spray paint and paint the picture frames white.
paint your dresser white.
paint the trim on the windows black.
paint your headboard white. or just get rid of the damn thing.
white curtains.
white and black duvet cover and NO i do not mean a white and black patterned duvet cover, i mean something like this. throw a nice blanket across the bed.

and for god's sake, get a real slipcover for the chair (that is, if you can't afford a new chair altogether). white, please. and put a neutral, unpatterned throw on it. and get rid of those pillows!

this is ridiculous. that's like saying that the eggs in my ovaries are fetuses [simply because they _might_ be half of a fetus later on].

eggs aren't meat. eggs are eggs.

if you're a vegetarian that eats eggs and dairy, you're a lacto-ovo vegetarian. if you're a vegetarian that eats dairy but no eggs, you're a lacto-vegetarian (or "pure veg" in india).

and for the record, a vegetarian that eats fish isn't a vegetarian.

I was born and raised in North Carolina. Spanish moss, painted porch ceilings, wicker: definitely southern. Not so sure about the tassels, or rather, those tassels. I tend to see the more traditional upholstery tassels a bit. Heirlooms are big down here since we're so family-oriented (the longer your family has been in the south, the better!), so silver service, silverware, and well-built wooden tables are everywhere. Big rose gardens are built into the memory of many a-southerner, and unfortunately the "pink and green" aesthetic is also very big. There's something a bit prudish about a lot of design down here, as well--very innocent and clean.

"Family's" or "families' ", not "families." Make it possessive!

@ 2lastnames: have you tried a mixture of the clay litter and wheat litter to get her used to it before switching completely? or put a layer of wheat below a layer of the clay so she can get used to it that way.

I second elvedon's comment. I use Swheat Scoop, which is biodegradable and flushable, and I don't use a liner. I replace the litter about every three weeks - once a month and each time I do that I clean out the box with hot soapy water. Not so hard.

Oy, I can't get behind this. When I first moved into my house, the walls in the living room were painted a yellowy-brown, and my couches and chairs are all yellow, and it just looked AWFUL--like a bad 70s video or an elementary school library. Ugh. Thankfully, I found a beautiful, deep teal paint to go with the yellow and it looks wonderful now.

Oh god, please no clear shower curtain! That reminds me of a dorm room. I'm sure you can afford a nice cotton shower curtain. I'd get a white shower curtain and a white curtain for the window above the toilet. White bath mat, as well.

This is about the same size as my bathroom, which happens to be painted a nice light blue color, and I have white towels, white bathmat, white shower curtain, which makes it look very airy instead of busy and claustrophobic.

I'd also suggest having some sort of medicine cabinet if there isn't already one so that any bottles/cosmetics could be hidden away so that the little space that you have isn't cluttered with stuff everywhere.

A couple of simple, muted prints (check out etsy.com for some great, cheap artwork) for the wall, in a symmetrical pattern (maybe four prints hung 2x2?), and that's it for artwork.

Hope that helps!
