After a long quest for an affordable, space-conscious solution to the organizational chaos caused by my shoe habit, I finally gave up this weekend and decided to DIY it. So now I'm in the process of building rolling underbed shoe storage out of pine boards and plywood. Casters on the boxes make things easily accessible while keeping them out of the way, the wood is solid and goes with my decor, and I'm not wasting valuable space lining all of my shoes up in boxes.

In early 2012 I had a large reach-in closet built in the bedroom of my pre-war apartment, but I never really organized it properly and things just stayed wherever they landed during a rushed unpacking process. My first big project is going to be getting that monster under control.

What color gray did you use for your walls? I'm on a quest for a good gray paint for my living room and, at least on the monitor, this looks like it might work?

My parents still live in the house we moved into in 1983, but they long ago evicted all of our belongings. My sister's room became my mom's office when she retired from her full-time job and became a freelancer. My room is now the TV/media room. Several years ago they even went on a basement cleaning binge and told us that anything we didn't claim would be tossed.

That said, it's still home and it still feels that way when I visit.

Have Your Parents Moved?

If someone has *just* moved in, I think there's actually a way to package the toilet paper that makes it seem like a thoughtful gift. Perhaps as part of a "move-in" kit that contains a bunch of little items that people need and often forget when they're moving into a new place.

I still often follow the Jewish housewarming tradition of bread, salt, and sugar. I'll pick up a loaf of good bread, some fancy salt (Himalayan pink is a favorite of mine), and some good honey (which I sub for sugar). To me, it screams tradition and thoughtfulness -- "Bread so that you shall never know hunger; salt, so your life shall always have flavor; and sugar, so your life shall always have sweetness.”

Another good one, if you're willing to put in a bit of work, is to do a takeout binder or a guide to some sort of neighborhood/local resources (e.g., for someone with little kids you could do the closest playgrounds, or for a foodie maybe a guide to farmer's markets or gourmet shops).

I have to admit that I'd prefer any of those to a spray-painted trophy...

I'm a big fan of wrapping an ice pack in a towel and putting it under the small of my back for a bit when I first go to bed. Then I'll keep it nearby during the night in case I need a quick cool down. Even though it melts throughout the night, it's still cold for at least 8 hours and definitely helps cut the heat.

Anyone know where the coffee table is from? It would be perfect in my living room!

The microplane and the stick blender are the two most useful "gadgets" in my kitchen (excluding knives, pots and pans, etc. because they're not really gadgets). I owned the latter--a hand-me-down from my grandmother--for years before I ever used it, but now I can't imagine life without it.

Brunch at the Tabard is an old standby for me. The food, service, and atmosphere are all fantastic and the prices are relatively on par with other places in the area.

Also worth checking out as far as eclectic, boutique-y hotels in the area is the O Street Mansion: http://www.omansion.com/. If you can't afford the (rather steep) room rates, there are frequent opportunities to explore the nooks and crannies. My personal favorite is the annual "yard sale", which sprawls through the guest rooms for the second half of August. There are some great finds in there, especially if you have a bit of patience and imagination.

What a great collection! Elvis Costello doing an off-mic, a cappella encore at the end of a three-hour show was one of the most inspiring musical moments of my life.

Most of North Carolina's actually a lot like the rest of the South. But parts are old industrial cities with old industrial spaces. There's been a huge amount of activity lately to rehabilitate the old tobacco warehouses in Durham and put them to all sorts of uses. They're gorgeous spaces, but they tend to be expensive by Durham standards.

I had a chance to visit the Esquire house this year, and the kitchen was my favorite part of the whole thing. Too bad it didn't make it into the house tour. It was huge and gorgeous and had more gadgets than I ever would have imagined. Apparently the Esquire bachelor loves to cook...

I've been holding off on putting CFLs in my bedroom because I hate how cold they make things look, so this is a great find. Turns out that Walgreens sells them in two sizes at $9.99 for a set of 3, available through the Web site and eligible for free shipping if you spend $50 or more.

I love the reusable shopping bag idea. This year I decided to go dual purpose with present wrapping and picked up a bunch of Whatever It Takes shoppers on sale at Macy's (a steal at 4 for $16). The bags, which have artwork designed by a variety of celebrities, are made of recycled nylon and fold up small so that they can be thrown in a purse or other bag to be used in place of plastic shopping bags. Meanwhile, the money I spent on them goes to a British charity called 21st Century Leaders that raises money for charities chosen by the celebs who did the artwork.

I cook a big pot of something on Sundays that can be doctored a bit to make several different meals throughout the week. That way I don't have to cook for myself every day, but I also don't have to eat the same meal several days in a row.

I'm gonna go with ET. Or Chewy.

As for music, I think I'd have to come up with something one could moonwalk to. Just to be cheesy.
