I microwave, but always wonder if it's making a difference... petri dish study, anyone?

I vote for the hot bottle idea. The only reason to use a heated blanket is if you're still cranking the heat at night (most people I know have it off anyway.) The hot water bottle eliminates the problem of getting into a cold bed, and keeps you startlingly warm. Don't knock it until you try it, they're cheap!

Why are people so critical of this post? Effort-to-effect ratio is amazing. If you don't like this iteration, adapt the idea to something you're into.

I wouldn't use this in my house. But it made me smile, and think, "Clever!" What more do I ask from my blog reading?

Hm, I know there are supposedly no carry-over effects, but in college I had a whole load of laundry dyed pink after a roommate decided she wanted red curtains...

This is such a great thread. I totally get the easy eco thing. It would be great to go full-out green, but not all of us have the time, money, or, frankly, the energy!

Here are my suggestions:
- If you pay for your own power, getting power strips that can be turned off isn't just green, it saves $. We estimate we save a minimum of $10 a month, and also noticed that our place was significantly cooler in the summer without our electronics silently powered on. Getting three prong strips will maximize your options for plugging in, too.
- Put a brick in your toilet's tank to reduce the amount of water used per flush (only a good option if you have a more modern system and can give up the extra pressure.)
- Pick the eco option when you're shopping for clothes. Tons of companies like Gap, Levi, H&M, and Walmart are now offering organic cotton clothing, often at similar prices to non-organic options.

If I think of more, I'll come back and post. I'm sure there a ton of easy little things we've started doing that have become so much second nature that I no longer remember them. But then, those are the perfect eco interventions, right?

Like Charlotte, I like giving (and getting) consumables, since they don't take up space. For me, hand soap (the frou-frou kind that is nice to have in the bathroom when guests are around) is an ideal consumable. As long as it's an inoffensive scent, I'm not picky at all -- after all, if I mostly put it out for company, it's not my hands that have to smell like it! Plus, we go through a lot of it, since it's nice to have a fresher bar for parties (the less attractive slivers get glommed on to the bathtub bar.)

Candles are a less of a giftable for me -- even hubby and I have a hard time agreeing on scents, so it's really hard to imagine finding a universally agreeable candle.

Darlingcaro -- I love the idea of the art as a postage stamp, btw. Makes more sense than the family photo (so tiny!) but still personal! I may steal that someday...

If you have access to a milk steamer, those work under the same principle as some professional machines. Just find something like tongs so you don't get burned by the steam!

Grab a bunch of sharpies and make a brightly colored Xmas tree skirt that doesn't mind when you spill water on it.
