I also collect old cookbooks with my favorites being the themed Betty Crocker and Sunset books. I very rarely ever cook from them but I love to leaf through them.

Recipes from Days Gone By: The Ones I Still Love (And Some I Don't)

Most foods that had a little bit of fat (butter, olive oil) and/or cheese added to it were winners in for my daughter. One thing that worked for me was deconstructing her meals using the same components of my husband and my dinner but just plating them individually.
But kids are finicky. My daughter went through stages where she loved seeingly 'adult' foods (artichokes were a great example) and then suddenly, couldn't stand them. Oh well-feeding her certainly keeps me on my toes.

Number 1 is somewhat of a no-brainer but I am lucky in that number 2 definitely applies to my usual, Sunday morning market. Not only can I get produce, but I can buy olive oil, eggs, beef, pork, fish, bread, cheese, honey-and probably countless of other items that I'm forgetting. This means that I need to have much more cash on hand than if they were to only carry fruits, veggies and flowers. Luckily, many of hte vendors now offer the option of paying with 'the square' smart phone apps so I can also just bring my debit card.
But despite that, I still need to go to the grocer for the obvious reasons. I just go much less than I used to.

I'm guilty of #3 as well. Even though I have a pastry bench scraper that I use frequently to get the cut items to their intended location (pan, bowl, etc.)-I'd say it used only 1/2 the time.

Very excited to eat some good home cooking this weekend. Hubby's homemade pizza and kale caesar salad tonight, tomorrow will be a mother's day bbq we are hosting with grilled tri-tip, grilled artichokes, grilled potato salad and no-bake strawberry icebox cake for desert. Sunday morning is unbeknowst to me right now (I'm a mom) but we will have grilled California King salmon for dinner. Delicious eating.

Pretty much any cooking Idid with my mom. I was the youngest and loved to help her in the kitchen: rolling out the big logs of anise cookies during Christmas, assembling hot Italian coldcut sandwiches on rainy weekends, my mom giving me the "crispies" from the Saturday night fried chicken dinners before dinner was served, helping her make the stuffing/dressing for the Thanksgiving tureky-these are just the ones that immediately come to mind but I know there are many, many others. All good memories-makes me smile just thinking about them.

Well my secret isn't a mango pit but I always pick off and eat the greasy, crunchy bits left on a fry or sheetpan after roasting or frying something. Thats where all the flavor is!

This looks fantastic. Given the success and raves I've had with the no-bake straweberry icebox cake, you better believ that I'll be attempting this one. Thank you!

Oh thank you so much for the post! In an optimistic and overeager moment at the farmer's last weekend, I picked up 2 full pounds of rhubarb before realizing that I wont have an opportunity to use it until teh following weekend. It will be going into the freezer tonight. Thank you!

Luckily I live in Northern California where year-round farmer's markets are the norm and so this problem rarely applies to me. But one thing I do is jump on the new items (green garlic, rhubarb, asparagus, etc.) as soon as they appear because their presence can be fleeting.

This recipe looks great but would prefer to test it using some of the substitutions recommended (greek yogurt and/or sour cream combined wiht less mayo) to see how it turns out. Thanks for the fantastic idea.

I loved this list and I shared it with a colleague/good friend of mine who also enjoys cooking iwth the need to feed 3 kids every night. We had fun commenting on each point but probably one of my favorites was the one about the gin and tonic: #38. If you have to ask “lime or lemon?” when making me a gin and tonic…I’ll make my own gin and tonic.

Loved that.

100 Rules of Dinner

Use them in stews, a pot of beans...anything that would benefit from that nice umami flavor. We also go through a crazy amount of parm and I also freeze the rinds but I do find that I go through them more often during the colder winter months than during the warmer, spring and summer months. But yes, this is something we'll probably never run out of either.

I'm interested to see if anyone has any other ideas.

I've learned so much from this website and so, so happy that I stumbled upon here back in 2008 when I was a new mom at home on maternity leave caring for a newborn. There are many recipes, tips and techniquest that I've picked up over the years that are now a part of my current repertoire of cooking, planning, prepping, cleaning-you name it. So for that, I give you a hearty thank you!

Congratulations on the book and I cant wait for it to have a prominet spot on my bookshelf.

I definitley need something sweet at the end of both lunch and dinner but over the years, have grown used to just having a piece of sweet fruit (plump juicy dried plums/prunes do the trick nicely as do figs and dates) instead of ice cream, cookies, and the like. I do like to treat myself on the weekend however but I try to make my calorie indulgence 'worth' it. That means full fat ice cream, homemade or bakery fresh pastries or the tarte tatin described above would be the perfect excuse to partake.
