He IS adorable. And although it's not my style, I think he did an amazing job, giving the home clean lines yet making it look cozy.

One question: I know the chairs in the living room are B&B Italia, but I can't place the sofa. Anyone know who makes it?

I have lamps similar to these, and I use lamp oil to light them, not kerosene.

Kerosene smells bad and is difficult to remove. I can buy lamp oil at hardware stores.

Sigh, I moved from a city that had two TJ's to a small town where I have to drive an hour to find one.

I really miss their selection of vegetarian products, especially their veggie meatballs. I also miss their Indian cooking sauces, their rBGH-free dairy products, and their reasonably priced coffee. I am, however, relieved that their desserts and candies (esp. the chocolate!!) are a safe distance away!

I personally wouldn't paint it, especially since it looks like it's in very good condition.

But why don't you get it appraised to find out how much it's worth. Then you'll be making an educated decision about what to do with the chest.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I destroyed the value and integrity of a piece because of something I intentionally did to it. By the way, I think it might be more than 100 years old.

As others have said, I'd get a smaller table, one that seats four and could be expanded for larger gatherings, and center it under the light fixture.

If the credenza is going to stay, I'd place it on the other side of the table, sort of as a room divider, and place the sofa against it, so that the sofa is facing the windows. You can then place table lamps on the credenza to use for reading light for those seated on the sofa.

I'd then put the television against the wall opposite the fireplace. Putting the TV so close to the windows might make it difficult to view the screen.

I'd love to see an actual photo of your living room, the architectural details look very interesting.

I've lurked on the Ikea Sweden site, and here are some of the things I'd love to see in the U.S.

I too love the clean lines of Shaker furniture and homes. And for those interested in feeding your real estate fantasies or maybe even realizing them, there's an authentic Shaker seed house for sale in Tyringham, MA, which is the location of one of the original Shaker communities.

"A bit pricey," I'll say. More like a huge ripoff. Tons of doorknobs that are going nowhere because most are close to 100 bucks. Besides the ridiculous price tags, you have to contend with a surly, defensive proprietor.

No thanks. I'll look elsewhere.

My 75-pound golden thinks the bed is his. It's a traditional double bed, and he likes to be in the middle, which makes it impossible to sleep in when he's in it. And when I make him get off, he has this sad and confused expression on his face that I do my best to ignore.

I never understood the appeal of a murphy bed, unless you need a large, open expanse of floorspace during the day and a bed at night. The murphy bed cabinet is a useless piece of furniture when it's folded up. At least with a sleep sofa, you have a place to sit when it's folded up. Although the cheaper sleep sofas can be uncomfortable to sleep on, the higher quality, more expensive models are quite comfortable. I know, I slept on one for years.

This is timely info for me as well. So, thanks AT! I just wish slate had been included in the line-up.

Anyone have experience with slate and know what the cost is?

Please explain why you would replace solid-wood white cabinets for what I'm guessing are not-solid-wood white cabinets. It also seems that storage space was lost by installing that stove. Seems a similar effect could have been achieved, while saving a lot of money, by just replacing the counters and doing some painting. (JMO)

The kind of expert I'd like to accompany me to a flea market is someone who can differentiate the fakes from the real thing and tell me when I'm about to get ripped off.

I, for one, don't need someone to tell me what's pretty and what isn't.

I don't object to the bluntness of Cecile-t's remarks as much as to her poor sense of style.

I probably wouldn't choose granite and stainless steel for myself, but I do think that the color pallet is cohesive and the kitchen in the "after" photos looks great.
