wow. those are so bizarre and you have my deepest sympathies. who thought that would be a good idea?? yikes! i would take them out and turn them into open-backed shelves and curate a collection of small colorful vases or vintage cookbooks or something else.

but seriously, wow. that is a mind-blowingly crazy decision someone made and it was a MISTAKE. HUGE. MISTAKE.

stay strong and take comfort in knowing that it cannot possibly get worse :)

i have the jasper couch in tatum oatmeal, and i will tell you that the upholstery is lovely. not only that, it's fade-proof, virtually wear-proof, and takes well to the stain-proofer. it has not stretched out, looks as good as the day i got it, and is very soft to the touch. love!

a little thrown off by the closet door and the tiny upright cabinet being so close together. when you open the door, doesn't it hit the cabinet? everything else is lovely, though!

mmmm...this is a really good post idea. strongly no (no!no!no!) on anything that is either meat-smelling, fish-smelling, or baked-goods smelling. vanilla is a definite no (because when i was in middle school, some girl kept spraying that ish and it was crazy offensive. i feel the same way about polo sport for men, thanks largely to this jock named brandon who sat behind me in math class).

yes on things like a clove/cinnamon/spiced candle (anthropologie, you know which ones i'm talking about. darn you.) and on lemon verbena counter sprays.

i would just like to say that the arrangement of books on my bookcase in no way undermines my love of them as books first and foremost. i am a strongly visual person; i remember books by the color of their covers just as much as i remember their contents. i do not buy books for their decorating value, i buy them because i want to read them. and i happen to like having them in color order on my shelves because i can actually find them faster. form and function come together for me in that way. to each his/her own, but in my home decoration and utility are not mutually exclusive.

I write only to object to the scavenger's horrible formatting.

Strongly, strongly agree that this new format is beyond terrible. I don't even like looking at it anymore. It's just a frustrating reminder of how good it used to be :(

I really love Rapunzel Veggie bouillion with Sea Salt and Herbs. It's organic, salty (but you can get it WITHOUT the salt), and when I read the ingredient list I wasn't alarmed. I think it's delicious :)

i can't believe that i missed this post! i grew up in rocklin too... thank GOD someone is doing something original and personal in a Rocklin home. there is just so. much. stucco. and pottery barn. not that there's anything wrong with pottery barn. i love what you were able to do with color against a consistent backdrop of blue and white, it really makes the colors pop.
also, i love ina garten and think her book is a fabulous touch in your kitchen :)

I am tearing myself away from studying to:

1. declare that the polenta/gorgonzola/pear bites look incredible and
2. to express my severe dislike of the rainbow colored bacon. what IS that?!

Hope everyone is having a lovely Friday...

well, it's pretty unfortunate looking, but function first! what about making a cute, bright oilcloth cover for it, using those cute weights you guys covered last week for outdoor picnic table covers?

hi! not really a cooking weekend bc it's just. too. hot. but i did try out thekitchn's blackberry buttermilk ice cream, and it was delicious and just a touch sour, not too sweet, almost like a yogurt flavor. so yummy! i love this site. also, it IS possible to make ice cream without an ice cream maker, and without doing that whole double-ziploc-epsom/kosher salt-thing! just stick it in the freezer and stir vigorously every hour or so. thanks for the recipe! will be making it again very soon, i suspect...
