They look great, but unsafe. Those angles are far too easy for an ear or claw to get wedged in.

I saw those cabbages right off and immediately started singing Suddenly Seymore in my head.

Yes, believe it or not some lower income people want modern design. One assumes that if you threw your name in the lottery, you want it. And perhaps they want to be in East New York because they have family nearby who will help with child care, or who need help with child care. Not everyone wants to just get the hell out of the neighborhood. Some people want to stay and fight for it.

From the NYC.gov (press release?) PDF:

The Purchase Price of each of the new homes is $329,333.
Eligible buyers should have at least 3% of the purchase price for down payment, be able to afford all closing costs, qualify for mortgage financing, and meet additional selection criteria.
Six of the nine homes will be sold to families whose income does not exceed 165% of AMI ($103,620).

That's a down payment of $9880, which makes it affordable in that regard. I don't know if the rules would allow for it, but 2200 square feet is large enough for an extended family, meaning you could have more than 2 incomes.

"Other": I like to see what's on people's radars, both consumers and businesses. I like to see how mainstream environmental sensitivity is becoming and Apartment Therapy is one medium for that.

I think it started for me when I was cleaning out my dead father's house and came across something like 58 bars of soap. He lived alone. It started me thinking about consumption and its emotional implications.

Good point, CJL. First reduce, then reuse, then recycle/compost when possible.

I've been wondering what to do about this dilemma, as I'm trying to switch to reusable bags for groceries. I live in a large building with a lot of dogs/dog owners and bulk deliveries of sales circulars and newspapers. I think I'm going to ask the mgmt if it's ok to put up a bin for clean bag recycling so that dog owners will always have bags available. At least then they're not ending up in the trees and sidewalks or in the trash (without being used twice).

Yes, taking long showers is a real problem. I have a dynamo power radio which I make myself crank partly as exercise and partly because it'll run out of juice by the time I should be done.

Uncommon Goods is actually a very interesting shop and has stuff that's hard to find elsewhere. They have a web site too.

They have several styles, coverings, and sizes. I have a bench in purple microfiber that I store hats in. They're pretty on the ball over there.

Wow, yeah, I didn't realize this was a problem that needed solving. Are people really spending their lives thinking about this? That's a little depressing. Perhaps people are using far too much toothpaste? Size of a pea, hello? One handful of water should be enough to rinse.

Um, I love your dog. And the cannisters. But mainly the dog. I love especially that he seems to be on everything EXCEPT the bench you made especially for him.

I got an upholstered storage bench from Home Decorators and have been very pleased with all of it. They keep sending me discount offers afterward, which I've used to furnish things at work too. I got a bench in Eggplant, and it arrived much eggplantier than on screen, btw. On screen, it looked more like dark lavender, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Oh God Anastasia, danger! Danger! I cannot imagine a safe way to extend the height of the legs the way you are suggesting! Please, if they were free, let them be free again to someone else. Or, extend the height of the SEAT by putting some sort of big foam block or something. Bolstering one thing is easier than bolstering 4 things.

On the MrGreen thing:
I just realized what really really bugged me about those posts. It felt like the ONLY reason he was at AT was to be bitchy at people. As if he showed up JUST to tell people what horrible ideas they had, as opposed to getting something useful out of the site, or offering help. Judging people is not the same thing as giving advice.
