So this latest earthquake made me think about preparedness kits again, and if it's worth it for me to invest any part of my paltry salary for one.

Sigh...

I'd hafta carry one with me EVERYWHERE, cuz last night when the quake hit, I NOWHERE near my car or my apartment.

So, now what?

I just KNEW I'd catch hell from the haters...I'm talking to you dancingspring.

Yes, I've heard of a dust mop, but they don't do the job half as well. If a dust mop did the job even half as well, then done, but it does NOT. Wipe surface, dust goes flying. Gross.
Then you have a dirty dust mop. Now what? Shake it out?

I have a lot of tchotchkes, so I have a lot of dusting to do, even more so living in SF, on a busy street.

Swiffer wipe surface, dust doesn't go flying, but sticks right to the swiffer. Genius!

Oh, and I use the Method one, too. The "swiffers" I buy are really just generic versions I get at the $.99 store.

Oh, you swiffer haters out there...I know they're not the greenest things out there, but they do SUCH an amazing job trapping those dust particles!!!!

What else can I use that isn't spraying something (the can...how "green" is a can of Pledge?) or just blowing the dust all over the place, only for it to resettle?

There is something truely magical about Swiffers.

Oh, and the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. That's another fav.

I do try to balance out my un-green-ness by doing things such as carrying around an Envirosax (http://usa.envirosax.com/). It's small enough to fit in any of my purses, so I'm always ready to shop!!

To comment on Thursday's comment...my packer knew I was doing the move either myself with day-laborers and a U-Haul or another moving company altogether.

My theory is that when the "Big One" happens, I won't be anywhere near my Grag-and-Go bag, so what's the point?

Coming from someone who has moved 5 times in 17 months (don't ask) having a professional packer come to you with ALL of the necessary supplies is the best way to go.

Why? Here are my reasons, in no particular order:
1. They bring every shape/size box you could possibly need and they only use what you need.
2. They use newspaper to wrap, BUT (and this is key) it is NOT PRINTED on yet, so no messy ink on your hands or your stuff when you unwrap.
3. No messy ink on your hands and stuff b/c you're not wrapping anything
4. Special spongey wrapping/boxes for mirrors and prints
5. Greater efficiency. The continuity of the boxes make it easier to put in a moving truck, instead of the utter randomness of dumpster diving for boxes that are every imaginable shape and size.
...and last but NOT least
6. Unexpectedly inexpensive for the value. My 1-bed apartment with a LOT of tchotkes was less than $300 and they were done in less than 3 hours!!!

Check with your local college theatre departments. They get donated tons of stuff and can't use it all.

I just posted a looong comment about this and how disgusting it is to me that these companies are wasting time and money on this.

I wish/hope that AT:NY will post the letters from the lawyers and, more importantly, the names of the stores who JUST DON'T GET IT.

Jeez!

AT:SF, have you gotten served yet? Any threats? We want to know.

I, for one, am a commenter. Not only here, but on Yelp, CitySearch, Perez (I never say First!!), NYT, ParkAvenuePeereage, whatever. I love to read what others have to say about the same things I'm reading/seeing/etc. I guess it started with the letters to the editor section of Vanity Fair. There was some goood shit in those, back in the day.

I have chosen my hairstylist, wine bars, laundromats, restaurants, stores, etc. etc etc. based entirley on comments. In fact, these days I wouldn't dream of using a company without doing the due-diligence of researching said company.

When someone leaves a negative comment and the owner of the business replies, publically, and makes it right, I am thrilled to give that company my business. To me it shows they care, they are seeking out the opinions of the masses and responding with change. Bravo! You win my business.

I'm stunned that lawyers would even consider this as a potential lawsuit in light of the fact that there are so many other sites that are DEDICATED to the unwashed mass's opinions...I mean, WTF?

The businesses that obviously have so much money to burn that they can afford frivolous lawsuits at the same time they don't WANT our business must be mobbed up. Who else can afford such idiocy?

post pictures when you make progress!

Kudos from the likes of us MUST have positive impact on your landlords:-)

Remember, no matter what you are gaining valuable design experience and that always counts for something.

Good luck and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: What To Do With Recessed Walls?

Agreed to everything above, but want to especially promote getting rid of the bookcase and if at all possible, the dresser. They don't "go" and take away from well...everything. Sorry to be brutal, but it's how I feel.

That one dark piece, a coffee table(?) looks better in the space than the lighter shades. In my experience, with darker, subterranean types of places, impact is important. The lighter pieces just don't have it. Maybe paint the tops of the "shelves" and the door a dark brown to match the coffee table? You could do the same with the bed head/footboard. Then maybe a pallette of 2 or 3 colors and you're off!

Even if it's a rental, you don't want to lug around dorm-style furniture until you own. That simply ridiculous and nothing anyone who reads AND comments on this site is about.

Anyone agree with me on that?

Thanks for the link, Doug. Much appreciated.
Being 5'9", I really think I need to sit in/on one of them before I dive into purchasing.
I guess I need to plan a trip to NYC!!!!! Yippee!

This is JUST what I have been looking for...it reminds me of the giant teacup sofa from 4 Weddings and a Funeral.

But, where to buy????

I have been microwave-less for 5 years now and rarely miss it. There are some frozen meals from Trader Joe's I'd try if the only way to cook it wasn't in a mic.
I use the oven/stove to reheat. A pizza stone is the BEST way to reheat pizza. I even throw a just-delivered pizza on the pre-heated stone to recrisp the bottom and make it oven fresh. Microwaves are terrible for bread-y things, anyway.

If I could I'd hang everything. Wrinkles are the worst, and just happen less when things are hung - PROPERLY!!! Nothing is scrunched in. I'm constantly editing. It's all arranged by color, too.

I use wooden hangars and clear plastic with clips only. No wire hangars and no plastic tubular hangars. Everything hangs at the same height and I can see everything I have.

My first, gut reaction is to stay at the beach, but it really depends on the commute.

This is LA, and everything boils down to the commute.

If the Noho place is air-conditioned, then that will save you from complete and utter hell.

This guy was covered in Vanity Fair about a year ago. He dresses in fabulously tailored suits and lives with his wife in her Park Avenue apartment...and they fill it with boxes of these peelers. He goes through every one. He is a legend. In that town, that's saying something!

I just received this catalogue in the mail and was wondering who was behind it, and Resto makes sense.

I cannot buy a piece of furniture without sitting on it, but the sectional looks stunning, tho not too comfy/cozy.

Best of luck to them, as that will prompt them to open a store hopefully. I wonder why the fact that Resto is behind them is such a mystery...that fact tells me that they are for real and know what they're doing. Hmmm...interesting, no?
