I couldn't agree more with Katanasnk said. I was horrified at all the comments about taking tylenol. I use aspirin only if I've been drinking.

When my grandmother was in the hospital for a week last year, my mom also brought treats. The top drawer of the nightstand was filled with candy. My grandmother couldn't really enjoy it but family and other visitors did. More importantly, we told the nurses and aids that it was there and to please help themselves if they needed a snack or a little pick me up over their shift. They seemed to check in on her a little more often and spend an extra minute or two with her when they did. It never hurts to show your appreciation and build a relationship (no matter how short) with the people taking care of your loved one.

Personally, it'd be a landing strip if it were mine (as others have suggested). It could also function as a sideboard for the dining area though. In that case, I'd treat it like you would the top of a sideboard. Add a potted plant or two or display some nicer serving pieces until you need to use it. Whatever you place there, make sure its easy to relocate when you need to use the space.

Tarainsevenvalleys, I'm surprised you are the only one to post what I was thinking. I live in a "transitioning neighborhood" so I experience this daily. Some neighbors take care of their yards and homes and are respectful and others not so much. Some are in the front yard, complete with junk and kids toys all over b/c they refuse to cut the grass and tame the back yard. A group of 10 people drinking heavily, smoking weed or blaring music with vulgar lyrics despite kids being nearby is also undesireable. Many of my other neighbors with a little common decency do socialize in our front yards though. We refuse to be runoff. Our houses are small so when the weather is nice, its easier to gather out front. It also is a strategic show for the deadbeats. Occasionally, we even rub off on one or two of them and they become more considerate neighbors.

The knotty pine paneling reminds me of an old beach cottage. I'm thinking painted furniture, maybe even some wicker or rattan peices. Good colors might be white, blue, pale green or buttery yellow.

my last apartment had a small balcony. I found cherry tomotoes and even cucumbers could be planted in hanging baskets.

There are some great ideas here. I have a couple to add...
Aside from talking to a policeman, many cities offer crime mapping on their websites now so you can see how much and what type of crime has occured in the area. Also, I'd encourage talking to neighbors. They are usually quick to tell you what the problems are with the home, landlord and other neighbors. Observe the type of heating system (and stove and water heater as well). An all electric place comes with just a power bill but if you have oil heat and a gas water heater, there are two additional ones to consider. Also, ask the landlord or call utilities and ask what the average bill for the place is. It has been years since I moved but they util co's at that point were happy to tell me what the average bill had been for my house by the previous resident. I am also a firm believer of visiting at night. Many good reasons have been listed. Another is that sound carries farther at night. During the day, you couldn't tell that there is an airport or train track near my home but at night you can hear both inside the house. My final suggestion is to check to see if the property is in a flood zone, especially if you are not familiar with the area. IT is not a standard question for renters but many in my city have found out their apts were in the flood zone the hard way - losing all of their belongings including their cars that were parked in the lot.

My method is very similar with the following exception: Add rice to boiling salted water, and return to boil. Give a quick stir, then cover and turn off the heat. The cooking time is the same and the rice is always perfectly done, never scorched.
I'm a bit too impatient for brown rice. I therefore always cook it in a pressure cooker. With a pressure cooker you can have brown rice in the amount of time white rice would normally take.

Aside from the issues LHSIMM mentioned above, I would think the risk of bird strikes would grow significantly locating an airport in or near an estuary.

I'm in favor of double keyed deadbolts. I grew up with them. The key stays in a spot near the door so that noone can break the glass and reach in to get the key. All of the family knew the spot(s). When the family is gone, you remove the keys all together and anyone breaking in can only exit with whatever will fit through the window they'd have to break to enter. Years later with both a parent and grandparent with alzheimer's disease, they were a necessity. Both would wake in the night and not know where they were. No key in the door (but in a drawer nearby or on a wristband with one of the person staying with them) meant that we never had to worry about waking up to find they'd wandered out.

I keep sunglasses, first aid kit, sunscreen, etc in a backpack for trips to the beach, pool, mtns, etc. Also, a first aid kit and basic tools in each vehicle. In my main car, the first aid kit also has travel size toiletries. Those have been a lifesaver on more than one occasion.

I'm by no means a germophobe so I couldn't care less about sanitizing the dishes. I worry more about utility bills than bacteria. I have an old house with its original kitchen so I got myself a used portable dishwasher. I love it.
Old ways are fine but I'm not scared of technology. You certainly won't catch me beating my clothes on a rock or outside in a tub with a washboard. Sometimes new ways are better.

I made some of these a few weeks ago. I used a 3/4" split ring coupler. I found 1/2" was too small for most bottles so I can't imagine 3/8" would work for most people. Also, I cut the rod to about 4". That gives you plenty of distance from the flamable mounting surface (I just mount them to porch and fence posts). Also, I added glass marbles to the bottles to reduce the amount of oil below the wick.

I love a good porch. I have to say though, I can't see anything about this one that warranted a before/after article. I'm sure the owner enjoys it but there was no real transformation shown. Very disappointing considering the title.

There are already some very good suggestions. I agree that losing the shutters would be a good start. The downside is that the vinyl siding behind them will not match the rest of the siding. Vinyl fades and as you can see in the pic, also stains (below the shutters). I personally would be a fan of removing the vinyl all together but as others pointed out, the maintenance isn't for everyone. One comment mentioned not removing it b/c of damage it may be hiding. If there is damage such as rot, you want to find it before it spreads. Also, someone mentioned painting trim on their home black. If you chose to use black or other dark colors for your exterior, be very mindful of the amount of sunlight you get. Wood (doors especially) that gets direct sun tends to crack and warp over time when painted dark colors. Also, vinyl siding can be painted. As I mentioned earlier, it fades. I've often seen it repainted after several years. It seems crazy to me. If you're going to paint anyway, why not paint real siding?

I'm glad to see some other carolinians jumped in and explained the difference between dumplings & pastry. Neither has veggies, as others noted, but my mom always adds quartered, hard boiled eggs to her chicken pastry. She's the only cook I've known to do that but its definately a good addition. If you want a truly great meal, make some greens (mustard, turnip, collard) and sweet potato casserole to go along with it.
