Don't walk Coney Island Ave!! It sucks!! Ocean Parkway is MUCH better for pedestrians - they have a whole long sidewalk between the main street adn the side street - it's BUILT for pedestrians. Once you get down to Cortelyou or Church, you can cut over (not far) back to Coney Island up to Flatbush. Trust me! I live right between these two streets, and Ocean Parkway is the way to go.

I have potholders like that - I have a duck and a shark. But they don't work well at all! Cute sight gags, but totally useless in the kitchen. You can't grip anything, and the heat goes right through the plastic. Sorry!

I've had this couch/bed (or it's earlier IKEA incarnation) for 3 years now. The bed is VERY FIRM. We ended up buying a mattress pad to go on top, and it's much better. You should also be aware that the cushions do not hold shape over time - you're going to be constantly pushing them back into some semblance of a square.

I would only recommend this if you're not looking to make a big investment, and if you're willing to sacrifice on comfort. We've actually had to give up a few movies mid-viewing because we couldn't take the couch anymore. (I almost think it's better as a bed than a couch!)

We did this with a long skinny desk from Ikea. It's perfect. So often we want to show one another the things we've found on the internet, and now you can just lean over to see. It works well if you're not super picky about "my space" vs "your space". I suspect the people complaining don't play well with others.

I like the idea of a nice warm terracotta beige or orange.... it will keep the Seattle basement cozy! Then you can add pops of red throughout to echo the barstools, and detract from the diner motif. Good look, looks like a nice place!

We're a 2 cat household also, and we use the crystals because of superior odor control. We tried regular clay (and they tracked it everywhere), and then we tried the sawdust pellets that break up when wet, but they just thought those were a fun toy. Then we tried the wheat stuff, but I couldn't abide by the smell or dust everywhere. So we're also back to the crystals.

I keep telling the kitties to go out and get a job to support themselves, but they just don't listen.

Stick a potato in it.

I'm not kidding! They are the hardiest plant, and can survive changes in temperature and odd watering schedules. If kids in grade school can do it for a science experiment, you can do it too.

Plus the leaves are quite pretty. And if you dig it up 2 months later, you might even get little potatoes!

IKEA has several sizes of the regolit paper shade. We had the big one at first, but then downgraded. It's not super clear on the website or in the store, but ask, and I'm sure you'll find a smaller size. We have a regolit arcing over our bed, and I love it. It's been fairly stable. The biggest problem is when the kitties decide it's a toy! Luckily the paper shades are relatively inexpensive!

I think it's a pity that you have a gorgeous springbox skin on the floor - if you put it over the back of the chair you'll see the "mohawk" for which they are famous pop up.

Are you kidding me? ANTS on my dishes?? That would be NO NO NO NO NO with a bit long EWWWWW at the end. I would completely freak out every time, and my guests would totally freak out, every time.

This would maybe be okay if you were an entomologist, but even then...

Hope4, I'm with you. The importance of staging is totally lost on some people. I thought this place looked kind of scattered, the white made it so washed out, and the furniture placement was just awkward. With the black couch shoved up against the kitchen like that, it looks like they created a "stage" where their guests can sit and watch their "amazing" children. Sorry. Nice job on the renovation, but I don't think this is anything special.

I would NEVER want to put my toilet cleaning sponge anywhere near my utensil sponge.... do you know how fast bacteria can travel across sponge material? Even separated by the fabric of the "house" sponge.... this is still totally gross to me.

I guess I should have also said that we have a metal bed frame and love it. I really like the circles in this bed frame, and I think with a really bright, modern-art-esque throw or duvet it could look bright and pop-y. Good luck!

I have one reason (and it's a really good one) to have a metal bed frame. Bed bugs find it harder to live in them, and have a harder time crawling up the legs of them, than in/on wooden bed frames.

You still have to treat the mattress and the sheets and stuff, but that's much easier than getting them out of wooden legs.

Nuff said.

I have a Turkish one on my desk at work. The guy who gave it to me said it was for protection from "blond and blue-eyed devils!" I'm sure there is history about that somewhere!

Oh my god! 3 years I interviewed for a marketing position with this architectural firm. The 2 lead architects really believe that by surrounding yourself with the "proper" physical forms you will never age or die. They're totally serious about it too. It was more than slightly freaky!

heatherleaf, I thought you couldn't take cats inside the cabin with you on international flights? We're moving to England next year and have had a hard time planning on a way to get our 2 cats overseas. I don't really want to have them go below, but can't find an airline that will let me carry them on. Any suggestions?

They look like nipples. Bizarre, robot-like, futuristic, maybe even a little Austin Powers "FemBot"-ey....

I'm frightened.
