In the SF Bay Area, CA, my favorite place for unusual, heirloom and native plants is Annie's Annuals in Richmond, CA (www.anniesannuals.com). Every year, she introduces lots of interesting plants and displays them in several raised beds on the premises. She's a local favorite among green thumbs here! I love these ideas! Reminds me of the architecture school at UC Berkeley that had full height shutters built out of plywood. Plywood is inherently strong, available with several finish grades and had a pretty pattern that looks like zebras to me. Also, it can be stained in great colors and used as "storage backdrops" for beds -- Koning Eisenberg Architects did this in their home and also arched it over their stairs in Santa Monica -- stunning and affordable. Love this idea! For filling, you could also use dried beans, coconut fiber (coir) or hay. I think you can get coir and hay at bulk landscaping supply stores. Also like the cedar shavings idea.
