I own my townhouse. I have bamboo floors on the first level but on the second level I have carpeting; although my neighbors share my side walls rather than being one on top of the other, sound REALLY carries easily. I'd rather have hard floors upstairs, as well. Anyone have ideas for a hard floor that doesn't carry sound (and is economical?)

I think it's lovely. When Venice gets foggy (for much of the summer) those bright walls will make the place feel more warm.

I am going to adopt your stash box idea -- I, too, suffer from the "out of sight, out of mind" disorder, but I also hate having everything cluttered around me.
