Oooo...Love the blue fireplace, and the blue and green kitchen!

Agree, jeffnyc - those Europeans DO have it goin' on, design-wise. I think it's something in the water....

Love oversized pendant lights - they can be a great focal point. Have a Galbraith & Paul oversized pendant in my upstairs hallway & love it. The smaller version would have been nice but ho-hum - the larger version has more va-va-voom!

Love the Biluna pendant featured, but $3500? Puh-leez...!

I do think the World War II generation had a thing for "stocking up." My grandparents grew up during that time and must have passed it on because my mom was famous for stocking up, especially on food. The house was very clean, but we couldn't open up a kitchen cabinet without it being full to the max, with multiples of everything, especially cake mix. When she died, we threw away at least 12 boxes of expired mix. Her brother is the same way - when he & his wife divorced, they divided "custody" of their Jello stash - and each took over 100 boxes of Jello!

Terry in Silver Spring - I agree that clutter can weigh us down mentally. Read an article to that effect last year & even though I've never had huge amounts of "stuff" to clean up, I did have piles all over the house (usually papers, articles and half-finished projects) & it was driving me nuts. Purged & organized & now love coming home (& feel much happier). The mess is now confined to my home office & it's very organized.

Susan - Wow! You've done a wonderful job of creating a bright, airy and cozy space - your living room has a wonderful warm feeling about it. Can't wait to see more pics!

EclecticLife - Tri-Taylor is a triangular section west of UIC, south of Harrison & roughly between Western and Ogden - named for Taylor St. - the old Italian neighborhood with the great restaurants.

rockalita and DCAI - I'm so with you. I wish it were on paper, too - much easier to read on the train, plus I just like the tactile feel of turning the pages. I tried to print it by page spreads, but it was a pain. Guess I'm just too old school!

Format aside, I do like the articles and hope they continue in a more Domino-like direction. I still weep every month when my issue of Domino does not arrive...

Symmetry in Bucktown on Division/Winchester is having a sale . They have great rugs and home accessories. Rumour has it they're closing the store.

Also on Division, Porte Rouge is closing as well. Stopped in last weekend and most everything is gone. :-( Saffron on Damen is closing too. Not a home decor store, but she always had a great selection of clothes, accessories & gifts.

Shop small independent stores, folks. Too many good ones are going out of business!

In Chicago, I swear by J. Bradtke Antique Movers. They move everything (not just antiques). I've used them at least 3 times over the years & have been lucky enough to have some of the same crew. Even though they've moved me into and out of 3 and 4-story walkups, not one thing has every been broken, scratched, dropped, etc., even after I wore them out with large furniture and huge quantities of book boxes. (I always did my own packing, but they handled all the furniture wrapping/padding, moving, etc.)

Quick tip about boxes - check Craigslist. Some folks give away their emptied boxes. Did that after my last move - great way to recycle & the recipients were happy not to have to buy them, especially the wardrobe boxes.

Love the whimsy of it...would look magical at night, especially when the wind catches the plastic bag "clouds"...

Your home is so warm and lovely - what beautiful light and great blend of styles. Love the vertical windows alongside your French doors. So when can I move in?

I'm with maricha - my mood greatly improves whenever I walk in the house after having it cleaned. I used to have someone come in every 6 weeks to do a thorough cleaning, but now it's more like 4 or 5 times a year (basically around the change of seasons or holidays). I use the The Maids and they've always done a great job. I never do nearly as good of a job as they do and would greatly fail the Martha Stewart housekeeping test! (Probably a result of rebelling against a perfectionist mom who vacumned and dusted nearly every day.)

I agree, he's obviously very talented, but there's too much going on for me. I think the dining room table could actually be stunning if it were paired with solid chairs (no inlay). The chairs detract from the table's artistry.

Sacre bleu! Do my eyes deceive me or are they charging $590 for a 28 x 45 window panel? Give me a proverbial break...

I agree with Jooly - the kitchen table is great and appears to be the only thing with real personality (well, and the dogs). Everything else appears a bit too studied - a little stiff. And the books piled on top of the yellow ottoman are awful.

Love the soothing colors - very nice.
And ohmigosh - my front door is almost exactly the same. I have good taste and didn't even know it.

I agree with IDstudent - a good attitude can make a world of difference. I stopped by recently on a hot, muggy mess of a day and expected the worst - but was treated very nicely.

Yes, the prices are kind of high, but like some posters have commented, they've done all the work for you, and they do have an eye for beautiful pieces in great condition. Think of the time you'd spend on Ebay, Craigslist or out scoring thrift stores/estates sales/etc. to find something similar - yes, the thrill of the hunt, etc., but time is money, honey!

I can't afford a lot of what they have, but will definitely buy a standout piece or two. Would rather save my pennies and shop here whenever possible rather than at a mass market retailer. Although you can't beat that 99 cent Ikea breakfast...or the vibrating floors as 10,000 people pack in on a weekend afternoon...

It's a toss up between Lakeview with drunken Cubs fans screaming and yelling (and peeing onto my front steps) and the West Loop.

A few months after moving into a beautiful condo on Madison, the restaurant across the street closed - and reopened as a martini bar, complete with drunken partyers screaming for cabs and having high decimal conversations under my bedroom window at 2-3-4am. I became a big fan of those foamy ear plugs...they even come in neon colors!

Anne, I'm ancient, too! I remember Apartment Living fondly. I grew up in a home without coffee tables, so I'm CT-challenged. Don't have one yet, but I'll be searching for the perfect one at flea markets this summer.

Great pics, especially of those vintage bottles! Checked it out at lunch today - prices are high (typical of Jayson H&G). Those gorgeous seltzer bottles - $150 each. The old keys were in the $30's I think. Chairs - smaller ones were in the $200's; more ornate ran around $600. A few cool things but pricey.
