I always get up, do my hair and put on an outfit; I don't change into relaxing clothes until I am about ready for bed. This is partly because I work at home and I find that doing this helps me focus on doing more with my day than just hanging out! Also, I make a point of buying clothes I think are attractive AND comfortable, so it's not like I have to sacrifice one for the other.

I'm doing a closet clean-out and thrift-store dropoff next week, so this is very timely for me. Thanks!

Stupidsparkles, the page you linked to is talking about leaving out meat. No, meat definitely should not be left out that long. But oatmeal is different. I might however lean toward olive oil instead of butter for the out-all-night factor. That would be fine.

Pale (not necessarily white) walls, Persian/Turkish rugs and leather is probably the most enduring interior style of the past 100 years - seriously, think about it. The nature of the furniture inside would shift over time, but there is no point from the end of the Victorian era to now when you couldn't have walked into a room like that and found it stylish and welcoming. It's a very classic template that allows for considerable individuality and versatility.

I really enjoyed season one but was pretty let down by season two. Still, I'm invested enough to want to keep watching, if for the Dowager Countess' zingers if nothing else.

If this is going to be on Apartment Therapy, how about as part of an article on doing seriously traditional rooms that are elegant without being fusty - and on Anna's budget instead of Lady Mary's?

Really love this. Great mix of pieces that shows how to incorporate plenty of traditional elements without ever feeling stuffy. This is individual and colorful without ever seeming cutesy or twee. Lots of personality, and it feels like a real, comfortable living space.

I'm another who wears dresses pretty much every day of the summer -- and spring, and often into fall and winter, too. (They are great for multi-city travel when you will be changing climates; the same dress that works with sandals in the heat can also work with a cardigan and tights for cooler weather.) For women they are a HUGE boon toward packing light, because it's only one garment instead of two to make an outfit; if you wear dresses for an entire week, that's seven garments to pack instead of 14. So wake up, Rural & Rueful!

Other tips: (1) Consolidate shoes. This is the number one error most people make. Unless you are doing adventure travel or going to something formal like a wedding, chances are you need no more than three pairs of shoes, counting the one on your feet. (2) An e-reader is your travel friend. I still love paper books, but my Nook is a lifesaver on trips. Most are dual-voltage, so you can take them overseas with just a plug converter. (3) Laundry exists everywhere. Hotel dry-cleaning is expensive, but many hotels have machines you can use for far less. Friends you're staying with would be unlikely to object if you did one load of laundry (particularly if you work into chipping in with some other chores). I often choose vacation apartments instead of hotels specifically so I can have laundry. One week's worth of clothes + access to laundry once a week = forever's worth of clothes.

My all-time packing WIN was going to South America for a week with just a carry-on. My hiking trip next month will require a checked bag just because hiking poles and boots are super bulky, but I still plan to minimize.

My friends who saw my house a couple months after I moved in were like, "How did you do this so fast?" But the thing is - I'd been dreaming/thinking/planning for a couple of years, so when the time came to actually shop, that part went in a flash!

I feel like you can overthink some things - you know, your gut instinct on flooring is probably what you should go with 9 times out of 10, etc. But a few other things I've waited on, particularly wall art; when the right item comes along, I'll know.

I'd want to see if there's a way to improve the flow/feel of my living room. It's a small room, with two doorways and a fireplace, which means there's only so many ways to arrange the furniture. Right now the focal point is the TV, and I wish it weren't. (It's not a total drag, as I usually entertain either on my patio or in my dining/game room, so the living room is effectively a screening room, but still.) Also, I feel like the couch, love seat and chair are all a little too far apart from one another for easy conversation, yet other arrangements I think of would be super cramped. Would adding a large coffee table draw the elements together or make a small area feel crowded?

Once we'd analyzed that, I'd have them help me pick out a paint color for my kitchen when I redo that sometime next year, and decide once and for all whether to tint the white grout in my white bathroom tile dove grey or not.

What Would You Do?

Seconding what SkylarkMelody said - think about whether the color creates energy or serenity. The same color that might be eye-catching and dynamic in a family room could be overwhelming in a bedroom; a more subtle tone that might bore in a main living area could be soothing in a home office.

More power to you guys who love small-town life. I grew up in a very small town in Mississippi and was one of those kids who thought, "I'm going to move to the big city, and I'll LOVE it!" In Hollywood movies, that kid always gets proved wrong. Me? I was 100% on the money. I lived in NYC for years and adored it; I'm in a smaller city now, but still a city, and I have dreams of returning to the metropolis someday. But that of course is the whole point - we're all individuals, and we're all going to love different ways of life.

I have one of these from about 1910 in my kitchen; it belonged to my great-grandparents, so I'm never parting with it. Fortunately it fits right into the decor, which is a mix of antique character (original wood floors, high ceilings) and modern appliances and granite.

I am currently debating whether or not to recover a chair or simply get custom slipcovers made. (This is NOT a DIY possibility; if you had ever seen my attempts at sewing, you would not argue.) Does anyone know the comparable price of slipcovers?

Go light or go big -- nothing in-between. I think you could do a streamlined-valance window presentation (like in Tequila Red's link above) that would essentially turn that fabric treatment into your headboard, and that would personally be my pick.

Depends on where. In the kitchen and bathrooms, where a high degree of cleanliness is important, show the dirt. In the foyer and high-traffic areas, hide it a bit.
