i have one white room in my apt, and that's the living room, but it's still a cacophony of color and texture. Color on a wall would just read chaos. Too bad none of these have real color incorporated into them - not just talking "pops of color" here.

God, I wish I knew what that felt like. I feel vulnerable and exposed enough sleeping in a tent in the woods or even on a sailboat in the middle of the maine coast. I guess that's what a lifetime of city dwelling does to you.

Wow, people are really taking this stuff personally. Lighten up!

I'd add to that, buying matching flatware or dinnerware
Getting nice linens and sheets with a good threadcount.
Foregoing buying a purse/shoes/that really nice dress because that's money you can spend on a lighting fixture/appliance/tiles/paint

My brother is clinicallly OCD - but I didn't take offense. I thought it was clever.

Don't be afraid to re-gift (as long as it suits the recipient). Also sample sales are awesome for gifts. I shop sample sales year round and stock up for friends.

The protracted bathroom renovation was finally done and coincided with my birthday, 2+ years ago. I went to a bikram yoga class that day, and then came home to run a bath with some salts and enjoyed my soak with a cold bottle of beer. It was amazing.

How do you know Alberto didn't buy his sofa and cushions to match the art he already had?

Judgy and bitchy.

I can't stress how much the end result is really worth it. My life sucked for easily one year straight. But when friends come over they really can't believe the difference, since the apt was really a stinking s#ithole. The "after" is just that stark of a difference. Also, in the end I also added another 150K in appreciation - which is really what matters.

How Do You Fit Renovation Into Your Regular Schedule?
6/6/14 01:04 PM

When I started renovating this was my schedule for the first month (i was still living in my old apt and waiting to move into my new place).

wake at 8am
Work by 9:30
Leave work at 7PM
start renovation work in new apt by 8pm
leave to go back home to my apt at 11:30
In bed by 12:30.

Once I moved into my apt, things got easier, except I had no use of my bath/shower so that meant I had to wake every morning at 7 am to fit in a workout and shower at the gym before work - at least it was only a 10 minute walk to and from my house). This continued for about 7 months until I got my new bathroom done. I did the same amount of renovation work during the weekdays, and put in about 6 hours each weekend day. Sometimes more.

Those were rough times.

Haha. Truly my weakness. Especially, with easy access to designer sample sales. But I do a whole lot of selling as well, so I don't feel as guilty when I drop a couple of Benjamins on a pair of impractical shoes.

I don't own a TV and I don't watch Netflix. Between renovating, cooking 80 percent of my meals from scratch, working full-time, and going out most nights, I really don't have time to watch tv shows or movies. I probably wouldn't have internet either, if it weren't for my need to work remotely from home on occasion.

These are all very cute, but I'd rather go with the $1.99 for a 30 to 50 pack of bright and patterned napkins from Ikea. It's expensive to throw a party and I'd rather buy nice cheese than some cutesy paper napkins that will just get thrown away.

What's wrong with uncovered windows? I haven't been able to decide on window coverings in my living room so there are naked. My neighbors across the street are either titilated or disgusted by my wandering around naked or in undies. I guess they are free to close theirs.

I quite disagree. I have spent that much on lamps - hell, even on purses and I am far from "very wealthy." It's about money management and saving up for special pieces.
