Check to see if they have floor models or sample sales. It's a good way to get great stuff at good prices, often, 50%-70% off. It happens in most showrooms here in NYC like Molteni, Ligne Roset, etc. The High and Low Prices of Our Furniture Apartment Therapy On... |

My friends and I love a good pot luck party. And when it doesn't involve food, we've just made it an unspoken rule to bring a bottle for communal consumption. It allows us to have parties often and without one person bearing any ridiculous cost - which it would be, since every single one of us would probably go through at least a bottle in an evening (yes we are lushes but that's another story). I'd rather have everyone contribute in this way towards everyone's experience, instead of getting a lame "hostess gift that would probably end up getting regifted anyway. It was actually a small 800 sqft 2 bedroom apt (my roomie had the other bedroom) but - yes that would have been essentially 4 adults in a one bedroom apt. So I guess I feel better about having said no, if you responded the way you did. I think i would just have allowed everyone to stay where they could find the space, and then paid my roommate extra for her troubles. It would have been bananas but it's the filial guilt from being asian. Overnight Guests: Can You Just Say No? Reading My Tea Leaves |

I once had to say no - and it was something I regretted doing later. I had an aunt from another country visiting NYC with my parents, and they all expected to stay in the 2 bedroom+1 bath apartment I shared with a rommate. I allowed my mother to stay with me, and then had my dad get a room for himself and his sister (they found a place in Westchester which was a hike). I just didnt feel right inconveniencing my roommate with 3 extra people in the small apt. I probably should have done things differently. Overnight Guests: Can You Just Say No? I do hope you are moving to NYC. While I had some difficulty making friends initially after moving here from LA, I've found that New Yorkers are rather friendly and social creatures, and if you go out often enough to the various happenings in town (art/design/theater/fashion), you'll make friends easily. It also helps if you're a social drinker. Examining Adult Friendship: Can You Go From Friendly to Friends as a Grown-up? |

I think it's more about environmental impact (or a varied belief system in what constitutes waste), rather than class rage. Just because you can afford humvees doesnt mean one should get one. I know it's everyone's personal decision - and of course, one should not live with an eyesore (i should know, as I have crumbly p-lam kitchen cabinets and tacky cracked 70s tiling in my current kitchen, which hopefully will be replaced sooner than later, depending on how quickly i pay off my student loans), but i think we've sort of gotten to the point as a society of just buying a new (x/y/z), when one tires of something, or if it just doesn't work for us anymore. My mom grew up reusing paper towels as well, and darning underwear because she grew up in the war in Japan. That, in my opinion is not a bad thing. Yeah, basically an unnecessary renovation from the looks of it - it was a nice enough kitchen- though obviously not as modern as the owner would have liked. I hope she donated the cabinets and acoutrements to Build it Green in Gowanus. I always think of the waste involved in renovation projects, and feel quite guilty when working on my own home improvement projects. People just really need to step off when it comes to people not following customary "norms" of society, whether it's the decision to stay single, not have kids, renting, or anything else outside of the box. I'm Renting...And Okay with That |
