I am so glad theothergretchen mentioned Santa Cruz Local Foods up above! SCLF an awesome online farmer's market - rather than online grocery store. Best of all possible worlds!

Your photos remind me so much of a cafe in Alexandria, Virginia called Buzz. They have a cute, though purely decorative, display of antique kitchen tools mounted to the wall. Photos here and here.

Personally, I would not use it, but I can imagine one using it on plane rides where you wanted to watch an iPhone/iPod movie. Better than balancing it without a strap as you would not drop it if you dozed off or if you wanted your hands free to knit or whatever. I really do not think they intend it for walking around.

I just came back from a holiday in China, which leaves me thinking that Shanghai or Beijing might make for some very interesting Food Guides. For that matter, how about Tokyo?

Paris has been suggested above and I think that would be excellent.

Glad you are doing D.C. - great food town!

I used to live in a mixed-used development that included at 24-hour Harris Teeter supermarket. Being able to pop in for something at 3am on the way home from being out was great. The best of all, though, was being able to walk though an indoor corridor to get to the market during a major snowfall that shut down almost all traffic - I did not even have to put on a coat. So, yes, living close to the grocery store is pretty super.

We have the Utby as a dining table in our house. It has worked out just fine. It looks great with a variety of textiles (the industrial/colorful contrast is very appealing). For entertaining in particular, the bar height works very well.

The biggest problem with the stainless-top Utby is that it was not easy to assemble, so do have an experienced Ikea-builder on hand when you tackle that.

I am not in love with either, but for those who do like the Target version, it appears that Urban Outfitters is selling a slipper chair in the same upholstery - $325, here.

That is good news. I moved to the Bay Area from D.C. a month ago and was totally stunned that, of all places, this area with such foodie pride lacked a Penzey's - the standard spice shop chain.

I loved walking in to the one back home and being hit with the lush, intense aromas and thinking of the possibilities from all those options. Yum.

It is surprising to me that Whole Foods is saying they will get rid of plastic bags. At some of the Whole Foods near me they have been making a big deal about how they have banished the less-environmentally-sound paper bags in FAVOR of plastic. Maybe those stores are anomalous.

I know this is probably not the best place for comments about cities to cover, but I would like to add to the calls above that The Kitchen expand beyond the NYC/SF blinders.

When it launched, it seemed this blog would be different from (better than?) some of the Apartment Therapy blogs, in that it would draw writers and inspiration that was not confined by geography. After all, it is about cooking and home-life, not about restaurants and going out.

As time has gone on, things seem more and more localized. New York-centric in particular.

Do the vast majority of the readers really want more articles about such topics as new grocery stores that open in New York or SF? Either we have them in our towns already, or we cannot shop there anyway! Similarly, why should a person being hired to do recipes and tips be from any place in particular? It seems like, if anything, that would be a great job to bring in some diversity.

Sorry to seem like such a complainer, but it is something that has troubled me a bit about this blog for some time. That said, I like The Kitchen and hope it continues to grow and flourish (I just hope those of us elsewhere will not be left out.)

I suspect this is a dumb question, but why would one buy this $149 remote to perform the function of the free remote that came with the computer? There are no extra features that seem obvious to me from the website.

I think people would still be laughing about music or movies, personally - if not as much so.

My boyfriend once worked in a record shop and tells a story of a man who came in to "buy a record collection" for his wife. Not records he cared about or thought she would enjoy, mind you, just things he was told were "classics" everybody should own.

The man spent several hundred dollars, just so they could own these things most people collect because they love and mean something to them and about them - and CDs are not even as pretty as books!

the max option is 8? I feel like a total geek to admit that I have 100 or so in my reader (and that is after a cleaning-out earlier this week).

We use Ikea "Lack" shelves (standing vertical) for our records. They fit just right, with enough space to easily pluck out what one wants. They have been stored this way for several years now, with no bowing or other issues.

I just want to say I think this submission is great! I think a dorm room should be completely legit - in fact, I say extra points to you for showing so much care for your 'temporary' space that so many people consider decorated when they tack up a Bob Marley poster.

I have a batch, and like to think I am using them to help bring back the personal/social calling cards of old. or something like that. they are cute, which is what really matters!

I do also know people who had some made up as regular buisness cards, with a couple different versions of the corporate logo for all the images. it was cheaper than getting standard color cards made and looks cooler.

Without meaning to be unfriendly about it, I have to say I sort of agree with the last quotation from Blake. Perhaps it is because I do not live in New York and cannot understand your ways, but just what is all the excitment about a new Whole Foods about? I am sure it must be a really nice one, but a rush to be there on the first day and all this coverage seems a little odd.
