Painted cabinets do go a long way....as do new lighting fixtures, new flooring, new furniture, installing backspash, painting the walls...

Sorry for the second post, but I do hope you'll consider giving some of the variety of better vegan cheeses that everyone has recommended a shot.

Your other Cheesemonger posts aren't about slices of American cheese. This post is the vegan equivalent of taste-testing Kraft Singles and Velveeta to report whether cow's milk cheeses are good.

It's a shame that your taste test was limited to these options, which in my opinion are the worst vegan cheeses available.

Although admittedly in a different price point, cheeses made from nuts (even aged, such as Dr. Cow) are far better. Also, recently Daiya has been getting more popular, and is a far better vegan cheese in taste and texture.

they had so much character beforehand. If you really wanted to paint them, I wish you had done so to a new set from a hardware store, which you could have gotten in the same design.

Somewhat related question: Where do you get Bird's Custard Powder?

I have a vegan deserts cookbook (Vegan Indulgence) from abroad that calls for it in like half of the recipes...

I refinished a set of these chairs myself, but reused the trim - it is incredibly sturdy black plastic, so I can't imagine what kind of damage it's experienced that would require changing it. I also found that the trim had formed to the contours of the chair, and couldn't have imagined trying to complete the job with straight trim. Like others have recommended, I imagine HM could help you out, but it will cost you. I found deadstock Girard fabric from eBay - total cost for 4 chairs was less than $100, and they looked practically new.

Looks great generally, but I agree with others that the dresser/mirror color is not perfect.

Also agree that the artwork above the couch is by far the weakest part of the room. David, you should find a way to integrate your interests back into that area. You had all those ADK mountain range posters previously - perhaps something that brings back in your interest in the outdoors, but in a style that suits the rest of the room. As of now, it looks like it could be anyone's room (or a hotel) - make it personal again.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my impression is that this isn't a "new way to hang art" but a way to display a product. The art is not on display, but is part of a tongue-in-cheek display of the products hidden behind it.

In other words, I don't think MMM is suggesting you hang your art on hinges to give it a sculptural effect, but is suggesting you observe their products as a valuable, high-end item that is worthy of being hidden for their protection.

Looking at the art as the concentration of this installation when it is swung out to reveal the real center of attention seems to miss the point.

meomi - I also agree. these articles are absurd, and grossly oversimplify the where-to-live argument. in the end, the article misses the largest variable in any housing decision, the preferences of the individual. most people could look at the top 10 and say they've lived in half and would never go anywhere near the other half. there is a lot lost in these attempts to objectively quantify something so personal.

djs - I appreciate that a resident was willing to acknowledge that despite all the objective factors that would appear to make park slope livable, there is a massive factor that lots of people find completely offputting. this response illuminates the problem with these articles.

but, they create good fodder for the never-ending, and totally useless, which neighborhood is "best" (for everyone) argument. live where you want, and like it because it suits you, not because NY Mag designated it as worthy.

This house is beautiful, but the pictures make it look like you'd need sunglasses to enter. Sometimes houses are light and bright enough that blowing out the exposures on the photos isn't necessary. You can't even see the outline of the walls in some of these.

I don't disagree with anything that I wrote being removed, so no need to apologize to me. The decisions as to what would be allowed/not here seemed inconsistent is all, which resulted in a seemingly one-sided conversation and some frustrated readers. Thanks for your thoughts.
